Tim’s story from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

We have had many patients here at Cliffs Chiropractor Clinic near Southend, suffering from back pain and neck pain amongst other concerns.

Tim H is a good example of a patient who was suffering very badly from a bad back. Tim’s back was so bad that he was struggling to undertake even minor tasks such as standing up and getting out of chairs. Having been told that there was nothing that could be done, Tim turned to Dr Arif Soomro, here at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic and was very happy with the results.

Arif believes in the principle- treat others as you wish to be treated. “Our patients deserve excellence and I believe every patient should be treated as if they were a member of my own family. To me this means caring for everyone as an individual, always explaining every aspect of their care and giving the best possible treatment all the time”.

Is your back making you feel old? Tips for a younger back from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Back pain can make you feel much older than you are. As the saying goes “you are as old as your back feels”. Arif Soomro a highly experienced chiropractor at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic Southend, shares some tips for the over 40s & 50s for maintaining a “young” back.

If you are suffering or have suffered back pain in the past you are aware of the affect it can have on your day-to-day life. Simple every day activities that we take for granted could suddenly take on a whole new degree of difficulty.

As a chiropractor in Southend over the past 20 years, I have seen many patients who are suffering with back and neck pain and many of them have told me they feel significantly older than their age, as a result of this.

Given the impact that back pain can have on a person’s life it may seem surprising that almost half of Britons currently suffer from back or neck pain with 24% claiming they have suffered for more than 10 years. Many back pain sufferers find that they are less active than they were 20 years ago.

However, it is not all bad news. There are a number of simple things you can do to help keep your back young at any age:

  • Our bodies, especially our muscles and joints, are designed to move. Keeping active with movement and exercise will improve circulation, posture and muscle tone. However, this exercise does not need to be strenuous, simple things such as going for a walk can really help.
  •  Try a new sport; yoga and Pilates for example will give you gentle exercise that will keep you moving and flexible.
  •  Currently suffering any back problems? Get them checked out and treated soon as soon as possible. For mild strains you will need to stay mobile with gentle activities. Use ice on the painful areas. If the pain persists see your doctor or visit a practitioner such as a chiropractor.

If you are suffering from back pain or have other concerns please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice to get you back up and running as soon as possible. You can contact us at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend on 01702 430430.

Meet Alice aged 6 months who was suffering from Colic – Story from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Treating children at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Meet Alice aged 6 months who is modelling her lovely pink sun hat . Alice has just been treated by Dr Arif Soomro. Alice was suffering from Colic and we are aiming for daily bowel motions, anything less is not ideal. The delay in transit time increases toxicity and can lead to digestive complaints.

As well as adults we also treat children here at Cliffs Chiropractic clinic Southend. It is often little recognised that children and youngsters can suffer with the same problems with the spine and joints as adults. These problems can in turn result in muscles in their neck, back and extremities to tighten. This tightening can cause the bones of the spine or other joints to lose their normal motion or move out of position.

At Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic Southend one of our highly experienced team of chiropractors, Dr Arif Soomro, is one of the country’s more established paediatric practitioners and the areas only Certified Chiropractic Paediatric Practitioner. The clinic also has the equipment and techniques that allow anxious patients or nervous children to gain confidence and achieve results.

Did you know chiropractors are taught nutrition? Melanie at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend shares this…

Did you know chiropractors are taught nutrition as part of their 5 year course? Here at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend we have recently participated in some great professional development courses on gut health to update and further our knowledge. Ask us about the “weed, seed and feed” programme for restoring and healing your gut. It may do wonders for you-naturally.

All chiropractors like to take a natural approach towards health. Chiropractors are educated specifically on anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, bio-mechanics, X-ray, spinal adjusting techniques, and related subjects. This extremely demanding curriculum helps to prepare chiropractic doctors to distinguish problems that can be treated without surgery or drugs from those that may be symptoms of a condition requiring medical intervention.

Before graduating, there is a closely supervised internship at the Chiropractic College Clinic, where the trainee chiropractor treats patients. This gives valuable hands-on experience.

After graduation there is a post graduation training scheme of one year where you work under the supervision of a designated chiropractor. This further solidifies your chiropractic training.

As part of the on-going training, all chiropractors in the UK complete a minimum of 30 hours of post-graduate education on an annual basis. This can, amongst other things consist of attending seminars, scientific symposia, and reading professional journals to keep up with the latest research.

If you would like to know more about nutrition or have other concerns please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice. You can contact us at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend on 01702 430430.

A common concern for many who have not visited a chiropractor says a Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Patients are often very surprised that they leave our clinic having had little or discomfort during their appointment.

As an experienced Southend chiropractor, in a busy clinic, I frequently have patients that tell me that they had been extremely nervous about whether the treatment would hurt and are presently surprised that their treatment has been so gentle.

If you are seeking chiropractic treatment and are asking yourself the question – “will it hurt?” then here is some information that may help lay your concerns to rest.

Chiropractic treatment involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine and other related areas.

Mostly patients experience little or no discomfort.  However, some people can experience temporary symptoms such as pain or soreness around the areas being treated.

If you are being treated in an area that is already inflamed then symptoms may feel slightly worse after treatment. Don’t panic as this shouldn’t last long.

When visiting Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic Southend you will receive a full initial examination and consultation before any treatment begins.  If you have any concerns regarding my treatment I always encourage you to discuss them with me.

You may hear an audible ‘pop’ sound during your treatment.  This will be nothing to worry about and may even bring relief to your symptoms.  The ‘pop’ is just the sound of bubbles of gas popping in the fluid of the joint as the pressure is released.

As well as manipulation, your treatment may include other techniques that I use as an experienced chiropractor. This could be ice or heat treatment and may include advice about posture and your lifestyle.

Please don’t worry, if I believe that chiropractic care is not suitable for you then I will refer you to the appropriate medical professional, be it your GP or relevant specialist.

If you are suffering from back pain or have any other concerns please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice to get you back up and running as soon as possible. You can contact us at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend on 01702 430430.

The Great British Bake Off is back – Tips to keep your back safe in the kitchen from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

It’s back. The Great British Bake Off series 5 is well under way for 2014. All the contestants are being tested with every aspect of their baking skills. With Norman Calder recently eliminated and Diana Beard has left due to ill health, the drama is heating up.

With so much baking and drama going on it is timely to offer some ‘baking back care advice’ to keep you cool in the kitchen.

Baking and cooking may seem a genteel and calm task but it often requires long periods of standing and bending which can take its toll on back pain sufferers.

Below are some cooking and baking tips for your back which will help you to maintain an optimum posture in the kitchen:

  • Make sure that your counter tops are set up for your height. If the counter top is too low then you will find yourself stooping and if it is too high you will find you are having to over stretching. Both of these will result in you putting strain on your back. If you are not fortunate enough to have counter tops at the right level you will have to do the best with what you have by standing with your legs further apart with your knees bent in the case of a low counter and standing on a small sturdy stool where the counter is too high.
  • When you are lifting heavy pots, pans or utensils make sure that you always face the direction in which you want to carry them. Always lift with a relaxed and straight back, making sure your feet are your hips width apart and using your knees to bend down. This will prevent you from straining your back muscles.
  • Avoid bending from the waist especially when reaching down to lift up heavy objects or reaching into cupboards for ingredients. This will reduce the stress on your lower back. Never keep your knees straight as this can lead to over-stretching and cause damage to your back.
  • If your back tends to fatigue when cooking, make sure you take a break and do some appropriate stretches whenever you are doing a repetitive action such as beating or whisking. Simple wrist stretches and clenching and unclenching your hand will help avoid strains.

Washing the dishes can also lead to problems. Below are a few tips to keep you safe:

  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and make sure you are not over stretching. You don’t want to be hunched over the sink – so stand upright. If you are using a bowl in the sink you may want to raise the bowl up on something to increase its height.
  • When loading and unloading your dishwasher, remember to bend your knees and keep your back straight especially when loading and unloading the lower shelf.

Keep baking and use these tips to stay safe.

If you are suffering with back pain or have any other concerns or injuries please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice to get you back up and baking as soon as possible. You can contact us at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend on 01702 430430.

More tech time than sleep time can damage your health – Tips from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

New technology is great. It has really enhanced our lives and changed it for the better. We can do banking, work and importantly connect with people all across the world in an instant. It really is remarkable what technology is capable of.

However this does come at a price and a new report claims the average adult in the UK spends more time on their technology devices than they do sleeping. As a leading Chiropractic Clinic near Southend I feel it is my duty to offer advice to my patients and readers on how to keep their back safe whilst on their technology.

More tech time than sleep time

The average UK adult is said to spend 8.5 hours a day on media and communication activity according to a report by Ofcom. That means we spend more than half of our waking day using technology.

As we continue to develop technology and it grows to be more and more useful it seems that we are pushing sleep aside to make room for it.

What this means on your health

Pushing sleep aside for technology can not be a good thing; we shouldn’t forget the value of sleep. Not only can it affect our ability to perform in work and personal life but a lack of sleep can cause long term problems and stress.

From my point of view as a leading Chiropractic Clinic near Southend all this tech time can also be damaging on your back. Poor posture whilst slouched over a computer, on your phone or tablet or even in bed can damage your back and cause you a great amount of pain and discomfort.

What you can do about it

As a busy Chiropractor near Southend it is my duty to offer advice to my patients on avoiding back pain and the other associated problems with all this ‘tech time’;

Avoid using technology so much – First of all it is a simple one, use technology devices less. This is easier said than down and can only be done if you set strict rules like no phones, TV and computers in the bedroom etc.

Don’t use your phone as an alarm – One of the main reasons we all use our phone before bed and as soon as we wake is because we use our smart phones as an alarm. This means we have it in our hands last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

Avoid poor posture – Finally if you do have to use technology devices or you just want to use them you should avoid poor posture. Stop hunching over your phone or tablet, sit correctly at your computer desk and make sure you get up and move every 40 minutes or so.
