“Besides a rough mark down my back showing where my back was pressing against my chair, I had no idea my spine wasn’t curving right. Although not a problem presently, this would become a problem in later life and that is something I really want to avoid. So I’m very grateful to the clinic for helping to explain to me very well what the problem was and help prevent problems in the future with next to no pain whatsoever. Already the mark is a lot smoother and disappearing and so I am very thankful for their help.”

The team at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy Christmas.

We are all looking forward to relaxing in front of the fire with a good film and eating lots of turkey and mince pies! At Christmas, we know lots of people will be wanting to do the same; watching lots of television. And being a leading Southend Chiropractor, we would like to share this advice on how to keep your back safe whilst watching lots of Christmas TV:

  •  Try not to sit for more than 30-40 minutes at a time. Take a break to stand up and stretch or maybe take a quick walk around the house
  • If you are sitting in a chair, make sure that your feet are flat on the ground, with your knees bent, with a slope from your hips to your knees
  • Whilst watching TV, the tendency is to ‘slouch’. Try to let the seat take your whole weight and if possible try to keep as much of your body in contact with the seat
  • If you have lots of TV time scheduled over Christmas, try to schedule in some exercise time too. A walk through the park or just around the block with keep your body moving
  • Keep hydrated. Try to drink lots of water especially if you will be drinking lots of mulled wine

Whatever you are all doing this Christmas we hope you have fun!

Is your commute a pain in the neck? Research suggests it might be shares Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Most of us, who are working, have to entail the dreaded daily commute. Whether it’s by train or car, it can leave you feeling quite stressed and often with neck, back or muscle pain.

A recent survey has found that 19% of the UK workforce feels that their daily commute is leaving them with pain. This survey that was carried out by BUPA has found that car drivers are the most affected, with 64% saying that their journey leaves them in discomfort.

It has been found that driving remains a main common trigger of back pain, as many commuters are spending a significant time sitting down, be it at work or in the car.

As a leading Chiropractor Southend we would like to share this advice on keeping your back safe when commuting.

  •  Relax. Driving in a relaxed position reduces stress on the spine
  • Make sure you set your mirrors in the correct positions before you drive off, to reduce straining your neck to see
  • Avoid wearing high heels or thick soled shoes as this puts stress on your ankles when pressing on the pedals
  • Make sure your seatbelt lies across the top of your shoulder and should never rub against your neck

Putting up your Christmas decorations? Take care of your back advises Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Putting up the Christmas decorations for many of us is an important part of Christmas.

Some people have even added decorations to the outside of their homes, with whole streets getting involved. Whatever scale of display you are intending, we want you to keep yourself safe this Christmas, especially when it comes to keeping your back safe.

Here at Cliffs Chiropractor we have some top tips for keeping your back safe whilst getting ready for Christmas:

Buying the Tree

Take care when getting it into and to the car. Trees are heavy and especially awkward to lift and carry. Don’t be worried about asking for help and use a trolley to avoid straining yourself.

Putting up the decorations

Make sure you use a stepladder if you are hanging decorations up, you may also need to use it to decorate the tree, if it’s very big.

Keep safe when using a ladder:

  • Make sure it is planted securely so there is no chance that it will slip or wobble when you are up it. Better still have someone to hold it in place.
  • When using the ladder, always have your body facing the steps, keep your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction.

Gift wrapping

Use a table or worktop to do your wrapping on as opposed to the floor. This will help you avoid straining your back. Remember to straighten up regularly, stretch gently to loosen off your back and take regular breaks.
