Healthy Plans, Come Rain or Shine!

As the evenings get darker and the weather gets chillier, it’s all too tempting to retreat to the comfort of your living room and cuddle up in front of the TV every night. Yet too much time spent slouched on the sofa is bad for you and the kids, not least your back health! So as the temperature drops, be sure to make an effort to keep the whole family active. We have even got two great ideas for you for when it’s raining (because the heavens sometimes open in Britain):

Rock Climbing

Getting some fun indoor activities on the calendar is a great idea at this time of year, because you can never rely on the weather! If it’s too cold or wet to go outdoors, there is still plenty of health-boosting indoor fun to be had if you know where to go.  Why not arrange to go to an indoor rock climbing centre? It’s a challenge the whole family can enjoy and it’s great exercise!

Ice Skating

There’s nothing more fun than wrapping up warm and gliding across the silky ice. Ice skating is a great family activity that’s also a great way to pump up your cardiovascular health.  Just try not to fall over!

With the right planning, there’s no reason to let any dreary weather dampen your fun this autumn. However, contact us at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic or your healthcare professional before attempting these activities if you suffer or have suffered with back pain.

So You Want to be a Chiropractor?

ChiropractorSouthendIf you like the idea of improving the quality of people’s lives, you have good communication skills and a solid head for business, then a career as a chiropractor could be for you!

As a qualified chiropractor, you’ll use physical manipulation, massage and rehabilitative exercises to treat patients with a range of conditions. These may include:

  • back pain
  • shoulder pain
  • neck pain
  • arthritic pain
  • joint stiffness and discomfort
  • muscular aches
  • sports injuries

You’ll take a holistic approach to treating patients; evaluating the underlying causes of their condition and not just the symptoms. Chiropractic treatment is designed to encourage the body’s natural healing process and chiropractors are most well known for the hands-on technique they use to adjust imbalances in the skeletal system.

So let’s look at the concept of chiropractic treatment in a little more detail. (After all, you’ll need to know this if you’re thinking of training to become a chiropractor!).

In short, chiropractic is a health care discipline that emphasises the body’s inherent power to heal itself. Focusing on the relationship between the body’s structure (mainly the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) chiropractic care deals with how that relationship affects the preservation of health.

As a chiropractor, you will be able to diagnose and aim to treat patients whose health problems are associated with the body’s muscular, nervous and skeletal systems. Chiropractors believe that problems or interference with these systems can negatively impact normal functioning, create pain and reduce resistance to disease. Chiropractors recognise that many factors – including exercise, diet and mental well-being – affect overall health and wellness.
What can you expect as a chiropractor?

There are few careers more rewarding than one in healthcare, but you should also be aware of what may be expected of you as a chiropractor. You may work alone, for example, or you may even begin your career by working from home. If you end up working at several practices (as many chiropractors do!), you may need to be prepared to travel regularly and work with different members of staff. Being a chiropractor is mentally and physically demanding too, so maintaining your own health and well-being is vitally important.

Here at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, we enjoy nothing more than using our skills to help people restore their health. Will you be the next to follow in our footsteps?

Autumn Days the Healthy Way!

The fallen leaves are crisp and crunchy, the weather is (usually) decent and beautiful outdoor spaces offer an ever-changing haven of natural wonders just waiting to be explored. Here at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend, we believe there is no more of a magical time than autumn to get stuck into some fun and healthy activities with your family.

One of the healthiest and most fun activities you can enjoy with your family is leaf raking and jumping. Simply rake up a giant pile of leaves and jump in and enjoy! Your kids will absolutely love the freedom and frolics of rolling around in a heap and they’ll have plenty of giggles watching the grown-ups getting involved! There’s a bonus with this activity too – all that raking and jumping will give you all a super cardiovascular workout! So what’s not to like? You can even take some of the leaves home to make a pretty collage memory of the fun you’ve had.

Autumn is wonderful. Take advantage of what nature offers you.

Essential Halloween Safety

child health advice from Cliffs southend chiropractorsThe nights are drawing in, spooky pumpkins are filling up the supermarket shelves and there’s an eerie feeling in the air. Yep, Halloween is on its way; and many of us are already getting the preparations in place to celebrate.

We love Halloween here at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic – so we’ve come up with a safety check list to ensure you and your family have your best one yet!

Safety on the Road

The traffic will probably be busier at Halloween, so make sure you and your family cross the roads carefully.

Put away any electronic devices and keep your eyes and ears focused on your surroundings.

Educate your children on the importance of making eye contact with drivers before crossing the road in front of them.

Be a good influence by making sure you and your kids always walk on pavements or paths. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings possible.

Trick or Treat Safety

Make sure you or another responsible adult supervise children under the age of 12.  If your kids are old enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar, well-lit areas and always trick or treat in large groups.

Costume Safety

Choose bright coloured costumes and decorate them with reflective tape or stickers.

Encourage your children to use face paint or make up instead of masks. Masks may look impressive, but they can obstruct their vision and place them at risk of injuries.

Give your kids a torch to carry while they’re out trick or treating. This will help them to see more clearly in the dark and be seen by drivers too!

Always try costumes on before Halloween. The last thing you want is you or your kids tripping over an oversized witch’s cape!

Driving Safety

Drive slowly and be mindful that there will be excitable children walking the streets at Halloween.

Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully.

Take away any distractions from inside your car so that you can fully concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

The most common trick-or-treating hours are between 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially aware of children on the road during that time frame.

The safer you stay, the more fun you’ll have!

Arif Goes Back To School

back to schoolRecently Arif returned to St. Thomas More High School to have a round table debate with several students who he first met following a talk he gave to about 120 sixth form students a few months ago. He returned to find out from them how we can best educate teenagers to have a healthier lifestyle.

The Back Story is a very exciting project developed to help people make small changes which can have a significant difference to their health and well-being.

Arif says, “The Back  Story is such an important project as we’re treating more and more young people with the kind of neck, shoulder and back problems associated with ageing. Making small changes now will deliver long lasting benefits.

I’m hoping these sixth form students will help me spread the word. The message is very simple to young people – Start Looking after Yourself Now!”

In the video, Arif explains how there are plenty of exercises that young people can do like the Chin Tuck and The Squeeze. Just as important is eating healthily. Starting the day with a homemade smoothie can be a simple and nutritious way to get started.

Watch Arif’s video below to find out how this team of sixth form students is going to help him spread the word to other young people.
