Acupuncture is possible for the needlephobic

Echo feature on Katie GoodwinTrypanophobia, otherwise known as a fear of needles and injections, is said to affect up to 10 per cent of the population. So what do you do when the only way to relieve your pain is through acupuncture, but needles scare you to death?

Katie Goodwin, 31, was faced with this dilemma. In fact she thought she’d have to live with her lower back pain until she eventually faced up to her biggest fear with Arif’s help.

After experiencing severe lower back pain and taking prescribed painkillers every four hour for a month that were not helping, Katie made an appointment to see Arif.

From the initial consultation, which involved an examination and x-rays, taken in the clinic’s on site radiography department, it was clear why Katie was continuing to experience a lot of pain. From his examination Arif could see that the lower back pain was being caused by her right hip. The X-rays revealed there was a loss of joint cartilage in her right hip.

Arif told Katie that the recommended treatment was medical acupuncture and manipulation. Medical acupuncture is a widely-used complementary medical practice that uses needles, inserted into specific trigger points on the body, to ease muscle tension, stimulate the release of endorphins – the body’s own natural pain killer – which alleviates pain, reduce inflammation and encourage healing.

Katie’s initial reaction was one of abject horror at the sheer thought of having needles put into her skin. However, over several weeks with support from Arif, Katie overcame her long-term phobia of needles.

Aged 65 I feel fitter than ever

Ray Clark, from Braintree, has been a gamekeeper and farm worker for over 40 years. Ten years ago, the 65-year old, started feeling pain in his knees when he was walking around the estate; X-rays revealed he would need a knee-replacement within the next three years.

He did nothing for a couple of years, then he visited Arif at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, for a consultation.

Ray had led a physical life which over time reduced the cartilage lining the bony surfaces of his knees. This is known as degeneration or osteoarthritis. The roughening of the moving surfaces creates friction and inflammation, resulting in joint stiffness and, often, pain in the surrounding muscles and ligaments. Physically examining and x-raying Ray’s knees confirmed the diagnosis.

The treatment would involve chiropractic to adjust and improve the movement, acupuncture to reduce the acute inflammation and supplements and nutrients to improve the cartilage and reduce the chronic inflammation that occurs in conditions like osteoarthritis.

Even though Ray’s osteoarthritis is advanced the treatment has delayed the need for a replacement by several years and he can continue working as normal.

Ray says, “I’ve had eight years of monthly acupuncture, and take daily glucosamine with chondroitin and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) supplements, which help my flexibility.

“Of course, I have my good days and my bad days but I’ve been able to work on the estate unhindered by pain since I started my treatment. At 65 I feel very fit, in fact fitter than ever and, importantly, I don’t need a knee replacement operation.

“Not yet at any rate.”

When doing what you love causes pain.

Emma SheehanEmma Sheehan, who works in the beauty industry loved her work and when she became a partner at Health & Harmony, a beauty salon in Leigh, she thought all her dreams had come true. However, after many years of working she was in jeopardy of having to give it all up until on the advice of her brother she visited Cliffs.

Emma was treated by Arif at Cliffs. Arif says “It was clear that Emma’s work position had contributed to a 50 per cent wear in the mid cervical spine. This, and poor posture, had led to a loss of the normal forward neck curve, resulting in a stooping upper back, neck stiffness and weak supportive musculature.”

The pain would ease fairly quickly but it would take time of course to fix the root cause by strengthening the area, improving her posture and altering her work and lifestyle.

“After just two weeks the numbness and the pain in my arm, due to a trapped nerve, had completely disappeared, and so had the headaches,” said Emma. “One year on I wake up refreshed and full of energy. I can work all day without getting stiff – although a little stiffness is inevitable in my job, and I’m walking taller because my posture’s better.”
