Give Yourself A Gift Of Being Back Pain Free

back care advice from our chiropractor in Southend Suffering back pain is not fun at all! Unfortunately back pain is becoming more and more common with four out of five people experiencing back pain at some point in their life.

Equally disturbing to our team of highly experienced chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend is the number of people putting up and suffering with back pain for extended periods of time. Research has revealed that over a third of British people suffer with back pain for a month or more before seeking professional medical help with one in ten people never seeking any help!

Our chiropractors often have patients share their stories of life with back pain and many of them have come to believe that they would have to live with their pain for the rest of their life.

Low back pain is one of the most common conditions that our chiropractors at Cliffs treat. There are many causes of low back pain from wear and tear to lifting things incorrectly to poor posture. Lifestyle plays an increasing part in the cause of back pain with our chiropractors treating more and more patients due to their lifestyle.

Acute, chronic and general low back pain responds well to chiropractic treatment. Guidelines from NICE and the Royal College of General Practitioners both suggest the early referral for manipulative treatment, such as chiropractic is the most effective way of dealing with acute and chronic low back pain.

Here are feedback we have received from two of our patients where they share their experiences of back pain and how Cliffs has helped them:

“If you have pain in your back, neck and/or shoulders, and live in the Southend area, I would highly recommend Cliffs Chiropractors! I was wary at first, but the team made me feel completely at ease, and my doctor, Paramjit Nandhra (Paz), is one of the friendliest, smiliest people I’ve ever met! I started going a few months ago when I was in severe pain. It has gone from a 9/10 to just 3/10 and I have even had some days completely pain free! I’m confident that if I continue, it will go completely.

Paz has taught me that a lot of the pain I had is not ‘normal’ like I had thought. Most people just put up with it not realising it can be fixed.

I’m personally not a fan of having the adjustments and find it quite uncomfortable (some people love it apparently!), but it is so worth it in the long run! I have also had X-Rays at Cliffs Chiropractor (so much easier than going to hospital) and have had acupuncture which is good. I’m also learning a lot and Paz always encourages me to ask questions.

I would highly recommend getting yourself a consultation

“6 years ago and I’d reached the end of the line with the NHS, they’d given up trying to figure why my back and my shoulder gave me constant pain and sent me to their pain management clinic who wanted to put me on low dose muscle relaxants for the rest of my
Life – it was at this point that my friend recommended trying Paz at Cliffs Chiropractic, I was dubious but within a couple of months the difference was huge! I now visit once a month to make sure my back stays in tip top condition and honestly could not recommend them more highly! Friendly reception staff upon entering, highly skilled chiropractors in a modern, professional practice! I have since recommended the cliffs to several friends and family including my father, my wife and my mother in law and all would give a similar glowing review, if you are suffering from back pain and not visiting this clinic then you to get up and to and give it a try, you will not be disappointed!!” Chris B (Facebook Review)

Are You Up Up And Away This Summer?

back care advice from our southend chiropractorIt’s summer time and while the weather here in the UK is sensational at the moment, many people will be hopping on an airplane for their summer breaks searching for what is usually elusive sunshine!

Taking a break can be a very good thing and our chiropractors recommend it, however, it can lead to us doing things we wouldn’t normally do, which can increase the risk of injury. Picking up heavy luggage, twisting the back pushing a luggage trolley and sitting awkwardly in a confined space for long periods are just some examples of things we wouldn’t do on a daily basis which can all lead to back pain.

Our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend want your summer holidays to be a time to relax, enjoy and have fun and not be ruined by a bad back. With this in mind they have put together some simple things you can do to protect your back when flying and it all starts with some preparation:

Prepare wisely:

  • Use lightweight cases, preferably with wheels, to minimise the weight you have to carry. It’s best to choose a case with wheels that allow you to push the case in front of you than having to twist your body to pull it.
  • Depending on your airlines rules, it is best to use two lighter evenly balanced cases than one heavy one.
  • Pack as lightly as possible. Most of us are guilty of packing way to many clothes and accessories for our time away.
  • Make your luggage stand out from the crowd so that you don’t have to lift too much luggage off the carousel mistakenly! A simple way to do this is to tie coloured ribbon to the handle.
  • Get a good night’s sleep before heading off to the airport. Tiredness can lead to mishaps!

At the airport:

  • Avoid using a luggage trolley if possible, especially if your luggage has wheels. Trolleys so often have  a life of their own and can result in a lot of effort and body contortions to keep then going in the direction you want.

On the plane:

  • Take care lifting and removing any luggage into and out of the overhead containers.
  • Avoid stiffness during the flight by doing some simple exercises in your seat. Shoulder shrugs, foot circles and buttock clenches are good exercises to do.
  • If it is convenient then stand up and take a walk around the plane.
  • Stay hydrated. Flying is dehydrating on the body so drink plenty of water or juices. Avoid drinking alcohol as this will add to the dehydration.

After the flight:

  • Get walking as soon as possible after you get off your flight. This will help get your joints moving. Avoid using travelators or walking along the travelators.
  • Take care lifting your luggage off the carousel.
  • Don’t forget to avoid using a luggage trolley if possible.

As much as we love to see our patients we really do want to help you avoid back pain and a trip to the clinic. Follow these simple steps to help avoid back pain if you’re flying this summer and do have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Will Your Back Love You After A Summer Of Sport

If you haven’t heard, the football World cup kicks off on 14th June and goes through to 15th July – yes a month of football coverage on TV. And that’s only a small fraction of sport that will be played out in living rooms and other venues across the UK this summer.

If you’re a sports fan the chances are this summer you may well be clocking up some serious hours in front of the telly cheering on your favourite team or sports star. However, our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic in Southend want to make sure you stay safe and don’t cause your back too many problems.

Many people are unaware that sitting for prolonged periods of time can trigger back pain. To help you keep your back safe our chiropractors have put together some tips for you to follow.

  • Sit right back in the chair or sofa  so that your back is fully against the back of the chair or sofa. Check your posture from time to time and if you find you’re slouching or slumping then readjust your position.
  • Stand up and move around at least every 20 minutes. During a break in play, say at half time, do a few simple stretches.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Sorry but alcohol doesn’t count!

Follow this advice and keep your back safe this summer.

Arif Co-Hosts The Spring BCA Conference …

In March, Arif co-hosted the British Chiropractic Association’s (BCA) Spring Conference. The focus of the conference was ‘Beyond The Spine’.

These conferences offer chiropractors an opportunity to continue their professional development and also to meet up with other chiropractors. Both Arif and Paz took the opportunity to do both:)

There was an array of fabulous speakers from the UK and internationally. They presented more evidence and research supporting chiropractic care, chiropractic techniques, methods of effective communication, future education in the UK and much more.

Arif spent time with the current and past presidents of the BCA with whom he continues to work with as a council member.

The conference is a great place to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Here is Paz catching up with our friend, Leigh Hurley from the Spine Fine Chiropractic Clinic. Also in the photo is a new friend, Lewis, who is a 1st year chiropractic student. Lewis, like other students, is just starting his journey to eventually helping and serving patients.

Back to School Back Health

back care advice for children from cliffschiropractorsouthendIt’s back to school and back to backpacks! Many things can lead to back pain in children, such as playing sport or poor posture. But some kids have back pain because of what they’re lugging around in their backpacks everyday!

According to our Southend chiropractor, children should not carry more than 10% to 15% of their body weight in their school bags.

Backpacks come in all sizes, colours, fabrics, and shapes and help kids of all ages express their own personal sense of style. However, it is important that the backpack is safe for them.

Here are some other great tips to ensure your child stays safe when carrying their backpack this school term:

Always ensure your child uses both shoulder straps and that they wear the backpack on their back rather than over one shoulder.

Pack the largest and heaviest objects first so that they are carried lower and closest to the body.

Fill available compartments so that the load is evenly distributed throughout the backpack and items do not shift when your child moves around.

Adjust the straps so that the backpack  fits snugly to your child’s body, holding the bottom of the backpack two inches above the waist and keeping the top just below the base of the skull.

Make sure your child lifts their backpack by using their leg muscles and keeping it close to their body, rather than bending over with extended arms.

If your child wears their back pack correctly, the weight will be evenly distributed across their body, and they will be less likely to experience shoulder and neck injuries than if they carry a one shoulder bag. And of course, when they’re used properly, they’re incredibly handy!

By being aware of the advice in this article, you can help to make a big difference to the health of your child’s spine!

Our team of chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend are experienced in treating children of all ages. If you have any concerns about your child’s back or spine then our chiropractors are here to help you. You can call us on 01702 430 430 to make an appointment with one of our chiropractors.

Walk More. Live Longer.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise we can all take and is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your spine healthy

It is simple, doesn’t require any special equipment, all the family can join in and it’s free. It’s also a great way to get out and about and visit the local area.

There are so many great places to walk around Southend and the surrounding areas such as Leigh on Sea and Hadleigh.

As a chiropractor near Leigh on Sea a popular walk that you can take starts and ends in Hadleigh and takes in Leigh and Sea.  It covers about 6 miles. Starting at Chapel Lane car park and finishing at Hadleigh Castle Country Park (with plenty of stops for refreshments in between), this wonderful walk offers generous views across the scenic Thames estuary and Canvey Island. With Canary Walk to the west and the beautiful Kent countryside to the South, you can expect to sink into the historical ambience along your way, and catch some amazing views of the local wildlife! Here is a link to find out more about this walk.

Make the most of the incredible area you live in – put one foot in front of the other and take the first steps towards a longer and healthier life!

How Many Chiropractors Does It Take To Make A Holiday?

Group PhotoAnswer: You can never have too many Chiropractors!

Melanie and Arif spent a great week in Dubrovnik with family and friends two of whom are chiropractor brother and sister. They are carrying on the family tradition as their father was a chiropractor and now two of their daughters are at chiropractic college.

Arif says, “We have all known each other for many years since before we had children and love catching up. We spend most of the week talking chiropractic, healthcare and where are we going for the next meal. One or two of us are also partial to an occasional glass of wine!” (Answers on a postcard to guess who!)

Arif also took his Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic T-shirt to the Croatian Coast:) Yes, Cliffs Chiropractic gets everywhere!

This year at least one of us was treated every day from acupuncture to rid the children of their verrucaes (yes it works and quickly!) to chiropractic for whiplash and herbal advice for detoxification.
