Is Your Medication Making You Ill?

health living advice from our southend chiropractorPrescription drugs have many side effects and at Cliffs Chiropractic we know that medication from your GP or consultant can save your life or improve it, but it can also come with unwanted side effects. It’s important to remember that drugs are not necessarily safe and to be aware of the side-effects.

Your medical history is important to us and we need to know all the medication you are taking. Make sure you let your chiropractor know about the drugs you are on – read on to find out how we can help you.

Record numbers of people are suffering or dying as a result of prescription drug side effects. All medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, have some kind of undesirable and sometimes dangerous after effects, from muscle aches to death.

Prescription pills are Britain’s third biggest killer with psychiatric drugs reckoned to be the third biggest killer after heart disease and cancer. For instance, antipsychotics, commonly given to dementia patients to keep them quiet, raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Psychiatric drugs also make falls more likely, and breaking a hip can shorten life significantly, while some antidepressants are linked to a potentially deadly irregular heartbeat. More than one million people in the UK are addicted to sleeping pills and anti-anxiety drugs, according to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Involuntary Tranquiliser Addiction, even though for years official advice has been to not prescribe them for longer than four weeks.

At Cliffs Chiropractic we have recently had a big increase in patients suffering from the side effects of their drugs, they had symptoms such as heart arrhythmia, gastric reflux, nausea, headaches and they were all being given further drugs and even a pacemaker to cover up the symptoms.

The answer is not to stop taking your drugs, they may be very necessary. However, if you are experiencing symptoms do look up yourself if they could be a side effect of a drug you are taking. Read the leaflet that comes in the packet or Google it. GP’s are busy people and cannot remember the side effects of all drugs so take control yourself. Go and ask your GP and remind him about the possible effects of what you are taking.

Ask your chiropractor for advice he will be able to guide you and help you with a natural solution to the side effect. There are plenty of natural alternatives that are safe and may help relieve your symptoms.

Possibly the most common side effects of any prescription drug are gastric issues, such as nausea, constipation and diarrhoea, because most drugs go through the digestive system to be absorbed. Other common after effects include drowsiness, pain, dizziness and skin reactions.

There may be a simple solution such as always eating with your medication or sipping chamomile tea afterwards or taking a ginger capsule for nausea. Other solutions could include drinking more water to stay hydrated, eating more often and smaller meals.

Melanie Soomro says, “As a Medical Herbalist I can successfully treat many of these conditions naturally and my aim is always to reduce prescription drugs as much as possible (in conjunction with your GP). As the liver is the centre of detoxification for the body including dealing with the end products of drugs often a simple liver cleanse can do away with the side effects of these drugs. It is our aim to help the body function at its optimum and with the right herbs, supplements and lifestyle advice we can minimise the use of drugs”

If you would like advice please talk to Arif or Paz at your next appointment or book an appointment to see Melanie for an assessment and get your body functioning optimally.

Back to Business at the HMRC

Arif recently held two Back to Business workshops at the HMRC office. The sessions were information packed and highly interactive with the participants experiencing first hand the benefits of the programme.

If you spend hours working at your desk all day, you may very well be complaining of a stiff neck, aching shoulders or a bad back. If any of this sounds familiar, please take a look at these six simple exercises we at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend have developed to help support you. They’re really easy to do, especially in the confines of an office. If you can make this part of your daily routine, you’ll be alleviating all those symptoms associated with lack of movement while improving your overall sense of wellbeing at the same time.

There’s no time like the present. Why not take a look?

B2B Taking Shape

Back to BusinessIn April we launched our B2B (Back to Business) campaign at London Southend Airport. Next on the list is HMRC Southend where there are 1,200 staff, the majority of whom are deskbound and have an average age of 50.

If you know of other businesses in the area that are interested in helping their staff improve their health and wellbeing, please contact Cliffs and ask to speak to Arif Soomro to arrange a workshop.

B2B is a fitness campaign with a difference: our goal is to help adults look after their backs by adopting a better posture at work – often hard to achieve if you’re sitting at a desk for most of the day. We saw this as important because back pain isn’t just painful, it’s expensive too; in 2014 back pain accounted for a loss of 10 million working days, or over a billion pounds, to the UK economy.

First we created a series of, easy-to-do exercises that would have the maximum impact on posture and energy levels, then we approached Jon Horne, the Chief Operating Officer at the airport and a back pain sufferer himself, to see whether he would like to be involved. He was keen for all his staff to benefit from this kind of programme, so we ran our first workshop with the air traffic controllers and then rolled Back to Business out to the rest of the staff.

Next on the list is HMRC Southend where there are 1,200 staff, the majority of whom are deskbound, and have an average age of 50. Our Back to Business programme will be perfect for them, as these exercises have been developed to be performed within the confines of an office space. Important too is helping to prevent and reduce musculo-skeletal problems which are, currently, the second highest cause of absence after stress at HMRC Southend.

If other businesses in the area are interested in helping their staff improve their health and wellbeing through Back to Business, please contact Cliffs and ask to speak to Arif Soomro to arrange your workshop.

Give it a try – Pat M’s comments about Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

We have had many patients here at Cliffs Chiropractor Clinic near Southend, suffering from back pain and neck pain amongst other concerns.

Pat M hurt her back whilst working as a nurse and started having treatment at Cliffs back in the 1980’s. Pat had already had surgery three times to try to cure her back problems but found that it wasn’t making much of a difference.

Pat’s back was so bad that she couldn’t walk, drive, get out of the house much and even found it difficult dressing herself and she was only 28.

Pat’s condition will never be completely cured but she has found that since being treated at Cliffs Chiropractor the pain is being maintained. Pat says that you should give it a try and now has great faith in chiropractors.

Meet Alice aged 6 months who was suffering from Colic – Story from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Treating children at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Meet Alice aged 6 months who is modelling her lovely pink sun hat . Alice has just been treated by Dr Arif Soomro. Alice was suffering from Colic and we are aiming for daily bowel motions, anything less is not ideal. The delay in transit time increases toxicity and can lead to digestive complaints.

As well as adults we also treat children here at Cliffs Chiropractic clinic Southend. It is often little recognised that children and youngsters can suffer with the same problems with the spine and joints as adults. These problems can in turn result in muscles in their neck, back and extremities to tighten. This tightening can cause the bones of the spine or other joints to lose their normal motion or move out of position.

At Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic Southend one of our highly experienced team of chiropractors, Dr Arif Soomro, is one of the country’s more established paediatric practitioners and the areas only Certified Chiropractic Paediatric Practitioner. The clinic also has the equipment and techniques that allow anxious patients or nervous children to gain confidence and achieve results.

If you have concerns for your child then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice in this area. Contact us on 01702 430430 or email us at info@CliffsChiro.co.uk to get in touch.

Did you know chiropractors are taught nutrition? Melanie at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend shares this…

Did you know chiropractors are taught nutrition as part of their 5 year course? Here at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend we have recently participated in some great professional development courses on gut health to update and further our knowledge. Ask us about the “weed, seed and feed” programme for restoring and healing your gut. It may do wonders for you-naturally.

All chiropractors like to take a natural approach towards health. Chiropractors are educated specifically on anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, bio-mechanics, X-ray, spinal adjusting techniques, and related subjects. This extremely demanding curriculum helps to prepare chiropractic doctors to distinguish problems that can be treated without surgery or drugs from those that may be symptoms of a condition requiring medical intervention.

Before graduating, there is a closely supervised internship at the Chiropractic College Clinic, where the trainee chiropractor treats patients. This gives valuable hands-on experience.

After graduation there is a post graduation training scheme of one year where you work under the supervision of a designated chiropractor. This further solidifies your chiropractic training.

As part of the on-going training, all chiropractors in the UK complete a minimum of 30 hours of post-graduate education on an annual basis. This can, amongst other things consist of attending seminars, scientific symposia, and reading professional journals to keep up with the latest research.

If you would like to know more about nutrition or have other concerns please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice. You can contact us at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend on 01702 430430.
