It’s Not Only About The Back …

Many people think chiropractic is about back pain but it’s so much more than that.

Craig came to see us for many reasons including an ongoing health problem with his stomach and in his words “bad guts”, he had no energy and couldn’t sleep properly. All these problems were having a significant impact and strain on his already stressful life.

Within two weeks of starting treatment at Cliffs Craig shares how his life has changed.

Craig from Fowler Cafe/Bistro in Leigh-on-Sea says of Arif “This guy has turned my life around I can only thank him and fully recommend all of their services and advice”.

When talking about Craig’s story, Arif stresses, “People think that chiropractic is only about the back but it’s so much more than that.”

Congratulations To Our Official Blood Suckers …

Don’t worry we haven’t recruited Dracula or a host of Vampires.

Arif and Melanie are now both certified phlebotomists. Congratulations to both of them as they bring new skills to the clinic to help more of our wonderful patients.

Arif and Melanie trained to be phlebotomists at Maxis Healthcare. The instructor at Maxis was excellent. They also spent a day in an NHS clinic to gain experience in order to become fully qualified.

Arif says of their qualification “This will expand our services to our patients we will be introducing some comprehensive screening services for many conditions including cardiovascular disease analysis. We’re very excited to be able to offer these services to our patients.”

Just another example of the progressive attitude Cliffs has to the health and well-being of our patients.

Meet Eddie Who’s Now A Happy Baby

eddie video stillRecently Eddie’s mum, Siobhan, brought him into Cliffs Chiropractic to visit Arif. Eddie was having trouble settling himself and feeding. Siobhan was also concerned that he was generally leaning to one side.

After his first treatment with Arif, on a Monday, Siobhan was amazed at the transformation.

On the Monday evening it only took Eddie 20 minutes to settle and go off to sleep. The next day Siobhan found she had a really happy baby. Eddie was happy to play on his mat by himself, giving out lots of smiles and generally seemed more content in himself.

Watch the video of Siobhan describing the transformation.

Cliffs Awarded WhatClinic 2017 Patient Service Award

patient service award 2017Our team at Cliffs are proud recipients of the WhatClinic 2017 Patient Service Award.

In 2016 over 17 million people visited the comparison site to find and compare clinics. WhatClinic reviewed data covering patient review scores, feedback responses and clinic contact rates and Cliffs was only one of a small number of clinics that met the exacting standards needed to qualify for this award. Not only must the clinic have a consistently high ServiceScore™, the rating measures the clinic’s commitment to customer service over a whole year, and so represents long term commitment to dealing with patients. Less than 2% of clinics on the site qualified for the award this year.

Speaking about the award win, Arif said: “We are delighted to be recognised for our commitment to customer service for the second time in WhatClinic’s seven-year history. As a practice, we set great store by looking after every single one of our patients. Being welcoming, warm and mindful is our culture and to receive such positive feedback about it is a reward in itself.”

WhatClinic.com CEO Caelen King congratulated Cliffs and said: “Our awards are now in their 7th year, and this year, for the first time – we have made the data that we use to calculate awards visible on our listings. Consumers can see which clinics have rated well with lots of other users, and clinics can evaluate their own performance against others in their market, ideally with the goal of getting better and better at serving their patients, which is ultimately good for everybody.

“We believe that by giving consumers as much information as possible that we can improve private healthcare services for everyone. With these awards, we honour clinics that are dedicated to the highest level of customer care and consistently putting the patient at the heart of what they do.”

Changing Changes At Cliffs

Chiropractic treatment at cliffs chiropractor southend on seaWe are implementing a new system at Cliffs after a recent course Arif has attended. Very few chiropractic clinics ask their patients to get changed for regular treatments so we have implemented a one month trial of not undressing to assess how you, our patients, like it.

Most clinics prefer it as it saves the patients’ modesty and time. So, next time you arrive for your appointment please be prepared to take shoes and coats off and wear loose clothing if possible. For new patients and for review appointments it will be necessary to undress and wear a gown as normal.

Thank you for your help.

Back to Work. Tips on Staying Pain Free!

back care advice from our southend chiropractorThe New Year is upon us and that means back to early morning wake up calls and back to the grind! But if you work in an office, getting through your January workload may be the least of your problems. According to our chiropractor in Southend, an office is one of the riskiest places for picking up a back injury. Hunching over a computer all day is a leading reason why 80% of people develop back pain at some point during their lives. But a few simple changes in the way you work can significantly reduce your risk of developing a painful back injury.

Here’s what to do when you return to the office this January (after sobbing by the water cooler for ten minutes, of course!):

1: Avoid leaning forward at your computer. Focus on aligning your head and neck directly above your shoulders.

2. Move your mouse closer to you. Ideally, your mouse should be right next to your keyboard to ensure you don’t overreach and twist when you’re clicking away.

3: Make sure your office chair has a good lumbar support for your lower back. You should also tilt the back of your chair so that it very slightly reclines.

4: As you work away at your desk, focus on breathing from your tummy. As you inhale, draw your naval towards your spine. This will help to engage the core muscles that support the upper body.

5: Make sure your torso is no more than about an arm’s length away from your computer screen. This should also be 2-3 inches above eye level.

6: While sitting at your desk, keep your feet flat on the floor and shoulder-width apart. Not only will this position help your spine, but it will also help to ease tension in your knees and ankles.

7: Try and keep your knees bent at a 90 degree angle when you’re sitting at your desk. With your knees directly over your ankle, your spine will remain comfortably upright.

8: However heavy your workload, make sure you get up at least once an hour – even if it is just to go to the bathroom or to do some shoulder rolls. Moving around and changing position will help to boost your circulation and reduce pressure on your spine. The result? You’ll be more flexible and less stressed!

Our team of experienced chiropractors at Cliffs have developed a programme specifically to help you called Back to Business. There are six simple exercises you can incorporate into a daily routine which are really easy to do, especially in the confines of an office. If you can make them a part of your daily routine, you’ll be alleviating all those symptoms associated with lack of movement while improving your overall sense of wellbeing at the same time. We’ve created a series of videos for you to follow so be sure to check them out here.

Returning to work after December’s festivities can be painful enough without picking up a crippling back injury too! Follow these golden rules to keep your back safe at the office this year!

Aged 65 I feel fitter than ever

Ray Clark, from Braintree, has been a gamekeeper and farm worker for over 40 years. Ten years ago, the 65-year old, started feeling pain in his knees when he was walking around the estate; X-rays revealed he would need a knee-replacement within the next three years.

He did nothing for a couple of years, then he visited Arif at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, for a consultation.

Ray had led a physical life which over time reduced the cartilage lining the bony surfaces of his knees. This is known as degeneration or osteoarthritis. The roughening of the moving surfaces creates friction and inflammation, resulting in joint stiffness and, often, pain in the surrounding muscles and ligaments. Physically examining and x-raying Ray’s knees confirmed the diagnosis.

The treatment would involve chiropractic to adjust and improve the movement, acupuncture to reduce the acute inflammation and supplements and nutrients to improve the cartilage and reduce the chronic inflammation that occurs in conditions like osteoarthritis.

Even though Ray’s osteoarthritis is advanced the treatment has delayed the need for a replacement by several years and he can continue working as normal.

Ray says, “I’ve had eight years of monthly acupuncture, and take daily glucosamine with chondroitin and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) supplements, which help my flexibility.

“Of course, I have my good days and my bad days but I’ve been able to work on the estate unhindered by pain since I started my treatment. At 65 I feel very fit, in fact fitter than ever and, importantly, I don’t need a knee replacement operation.

“Not yet at any rate.”
