Is Your Back Pain Making You Feel Old?

It’s not uncommon for our chiropractors at our busy chiropractic clinic in Southend to hear patients tell them how their back pain is making them feel old.

Back pain can have a tremendous impact on your life and can be quite debilitating for some. For many back pain sufferers simple day to day tasks which we take for granted suddenly become monumental tasks.

Given that at least 4 our of 5 adults will at some time in their lives experience back pain, our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, do all that they can to help educate people on actions that they can take to help keep their back and spine healthy.

One such initiative has been developed by our chiropractor, Arif Soomro. The Back Story programme has been developed by Arif to help people at different ages to be healthy and to counter balance the effects that modern day living in particular are having on us. By selecting your age group, you will find out about your body, the food and nutrients and exercise that will be beneficial for you at this age.

If you are currently suffering back pain then our chiropractors recommend that if you have been experiencing the pain for some time that you seek professional advice.

Chiropractic is a gentle, safe and effective treatment for many types of back pain. Low back pain is one of the most common conditions our team of experienced chiropractors treat.

Get Walking This Autumn

Summer is slipping away and autumn is nearly upon us, however, it can be such a great time of year to get outdoors and take some exercise. Our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend can’t stress enough how important taking regular exercise is both for our physical and mental health.

Walking is a great form of exercise. It is accessible, free and can be done by most people whatever their age or level of fitness.

We are fortunate that Southend and the surrounding areas offer many wonderful places to get outdoors and walk.

Our chiropractors advise that if you haven’t exercised for some time then start slowly. Make sure you wear a good pair of comfortable shoes that provide good support. Build up your walking pace over time. To gain the health benefits from your walking you will need to walk briskly. A good test to check whether you are walking sufficiently fast is to try singing a song – if you find that difficult but can speak it then you’re probably walking at the right pace.

If you have any health concerns then it is advisable to talk to your GP, chiropractor or other health care practitioner for advice before starting any new form of exercise.

Will Your Back Love You After A Summer Of Sport

If you haven’t heard, the football World cup kicks off on 14th June and goes through to 15th July – yes a month of football coverage on TV. And that’s only a small fraction of sport that will be played out in living rooms and other venues across the UK this summer.

If you’re a sports fan the chances are this summer you may well be clocking up some serious hours in front of the telly cheering on your favourite team or sports star. However, our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic in Southend want to make sure you stay safe and don’t cause your back too many problems.

Many people are unaware that sitting for prolonged periods of time can trigger back pain. To help you keep your back safe our chiropractors have put together some tips for you to follow.

  • Sit right back in the chair or sofa  so that your back is fully against the back of the chair or sofa. Check your posture from time to time and if you find you’re slouching or slumping then readjust your position.
  • Stand up and move around at least every 20 minutes. During a break in play, say at half time, do a few simple stretches.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Sorry but alcohol doesn’t count!

Follow this advice and keep your back safe this summer.

Cycling is great way to get active. It has many benefits ranging from health, social and environmental ones.

As chiropractors we encourage people to get get active and take exercise. It is so important for a healthy spine. Unfortunately many people don’t realise how important it can also be to their recovery from back pain. It’s not uncommon for our chiropractors to treat patients who believed that resting would have helped ease their back pain.

Cycle offers many benefits which include:

  • helping improve the health of your heart and immune system
  •  helping you manage your weight
  •  reducing stress, anxiety and improving mental health
  •  helping you sleep better

  • Make sure you adjust the bike to suit your body before setting off. You should be able to reach the handlebars without overreaching or putting strain on your back, neck, shoulders or wrists.
  • Ideally the seat should be sloping forward or flat. Adjust the height so that your able to sit on the seat with your legs almost straight. When the pedal is in the most downward position your leg should be slightly bent at the  knee.
  • Start slowly and build up your intensity. Don’t overdo it on your first ride out – you’ll either injury yourself or put yourself off going again! Remember not all exercise is the same – even if you do some other form of exercise regularly, cycling may use different muscles groups.
  • Allow time to warm up before setting of and cooling down at the end of the ride.
  • Wear appropriate clothing that will be comfortable and not restrict your movement. You may want to consider some suitable padded clothing for cycling!
  • Change your position from time to time when cycling.

Why not get out there and have a go you may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

If you haven’t take any exercise for a while or you are suffering pain or discomfort then you should seek advice from your chiropractor or health care professional before getting started.

Autumn Days the Healthy Way!

The fallen leaves are crisp and crunchy, the weather is (usually) decent and beautiful outdoor spaces offer an ever-changing haven of natural wonders just waiting to be explored. Here at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend, we believe there is no more of a magical time than autumn to get stuck into some fun and healthy activities with your family.

One of the healthiest and most fun activities you can enjoy with your family is leaf raking and jumping. Simply rake up a giant pile of leaves and jump in and enjoy! Your kids will absolutely love the freedom and frolics of rolling around in a heap and they’ll have plenty of giggles watching the grown-ups getting involved! There’s a bonus with this activity too – all that raking and jumping will give you all a super cardiovascular workout! So what’s not to like? You can even take some of the leaves home to make a pretty collage memory of the fun you’ve had.

Autumn is wonderful. Take advantage of what nature offers you.
