Why Is Our Reception Full of Babies and Pregnant Ladies?

treating babies at cliffs chiropractor southendAs one of the UK’s first chiropractors to qualify as a Certified Chiropractic Paediatric Practitioner, Arif, who is also a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association, attracts new mothers and pregnant ladies from across Essex (and further afield) who are looking for Chiropractic treatment to help them.

Many people are unware that chiropractic treatment can be effective during pregnancy and for the care of babies and children. However, a specialised approach is required for this level of chiropractic care.

You can read more about the pregnancy care and paediatric care we offer at Cliffs on our website.

We believe that it often helps to hear our patients’ own experiences of the care that we offer. Here is feedback that we received on our Facebook page recently from two of our patients.

Pregnancy Care

“If you are considering chiropractic care whilst pregnant then without a doubt do it. I had my first child without chiropractic care (was kicking myself after!) the labour was much longer as I suffered hip pain, this I discovered much later was due to a variety of issues which led to the womb becoming the shape of a 3D figure of eight. labour took much longer as the head wasn’t engaged since baby was at the top and took a considerable time to move further down. Anyway the long and short of it was a long labour with the need for a drip etc to speed things along!! However when I had my second child I had discovered the wonders of chiropractic care. The labour was the total opposite, the womb would have been balloon shaped with the regular adjustments and was much better without the need of medical interference. I gave birth at home (as planned!) in much less time and a great deal more pleasant. All I can suggest is that with chiropractic care you will give both you and baby the best advantage possible at a stressful time! If anyone would like to know more feel free to ask. Arif was amazing and soooo enthusiastic too.” Col Wright

Paediatric Care

“I have been coming to see the team here since 2011. My daughter who is now 4 has been seen by Arif since her birth in 2012.

The team are fantastic, I can leave Sophia in capable hands whilst I have my treatment and she is in safe hands. She will be a great receptionist when she grows up.

Sophia has been seeing Arif since birth and she draws him pictures. She’s gone from a babe in arms to now lying down on the table and enjoying her treatment.

Sophia has a life shorting condition and her health and welfare is paramount. We will do everything we can to keep her healthy.

I believe that her treatment here benefits her condition.” Lisa Hyde

The Queen at 90 looks amazing; what’s her secret? Walking.

active ageing advice from cliffs chiropractor southendArif Soomro, founder of Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Essex, and Chiropractor of the Year, has analysed the Queen’s posture and says that everyone would improve their health and wellbeing if they took a leaf from her book and walked.

There aren’t many men and women who are working full time in their 80s, let alone their 90s, so it’s fair to say that Queen Elizabeth is an inspiration to all ages. But if I was to compare her outward appearance and energy levels to someone half her age, she’d come out on top.

After a lifetime of state dinners and chauffeur-driven cars, the Queen at 90 could look significantly different, but she doesn’t have diabetes, isn’t overweight or arthritic and is rarely ill. Before I’m accused of ignoring her privilege and considerable wealth, I don’t believe money and access to the best clinicians in the world have played any part in her obvious vitality. Our Queen is, quite simply, living proof that our lifestyle choices determine our future health. The biggest single factor that has contributed to her majesty’s excellent physical condition is, quite simply, walking.

We all know that walking’s good for us and that it’s the cheapest and easiest way to stay fit, but it has many other benefits: it’s a low impact exercise; it aids lymphatic drainage, which relies on body movement (unlike our blood, which is pumped around by our heart); the muscle contractions in the legs help the return flow of lymph up the legs towards the chest, taking waste products with it and improving fat metabolism; and, for every mile the average person walks, the spine will move to and fro 10,000 times, which prevents a stiff back.

What keeps the Queen looking younger than her years, is her posture. She doesn’t stoop which comes from standing tall, with her shoulders back and down, at all times. An open posture means you can breathe deeply, allowing more oxygen to circulate around the body which, in turn, makes you feel and look more energetic

The royal family is no stranger to chiropractic. Prince Charles has long been an advocate of complementary medicine and supported the state registration of chiropractic in the 90s and Diana, Princess of Wales was patron of the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth, the largest chiropractic college in Europe, where I trained with Melanie, who co-founded Cliffs with me. Melanie is also Chiropractor of the Year.

I couldn’t complete this article without mentioning food! As we age we need to modify what we eat because our bodies don’t need as many calories to carry out functions; less meat and more vegetables would be a good start. As our calorific needs decrease, our ageing cells need more nutrients and that’s where supplements come in; try calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium, omega 3 and co enzyme Q10.

We may not all be able to emulate the Queen’s healthy habits, but we can wish her a Happy 90th Birthday. Here’s to the next 10!

When doing what you love causes pain.

Emma SheehanEmma Sheehan, who works in the beauty industry loved her work and when she became a partner at Health & Harmony, a beauty salon in Leigh, she thought all her dreams had come true. However, after many years of working she was in jeopardy of having to give it all up until on the advice of her brother she visited Cliffs.

You may have read Emma’s story in the Echo.

Click here to read Emma’s full story and Arif’s diagnosis and treatment plan in the Echo. You can also learn ways to test your posture.

Emma was treated by Arif at Cliffs. Arif says “It was clear that Emma’s work position had contributed to a 50 per cent wear in the mid cervical spine. This, and poor posture, had led to a loss of the normal forward neck curve, resulting in a stooping upper back, neck stiffness and weak supportive musculature.”

echo years massaging story thumbnailArif was confident that she would respond well to a combined approach of chiropractic and acupuncture. The pain would ease fairly quickly but it would take time of course to fix the root cause by strengthening the area, improving her posture and altering her work and lifestyle.

“After just two weeks the numbness and the pain in my arm, due to a trapped nerve, had completely disappeared, and so had the headaches,” said Emma. “One year on I wake up refreshed and full of energy. I can work all day without getting stiff – although a little stiffness is inevitable in my job, and I’m walking taller because my posture’s better.”

Chiropractic versus NHS treatment? Some of our patients at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend share their reasons for choosing chiropractic with us

arifpazmanu at cliffs chiropractor southendi Here at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend we are always looking for ways to build greater understanding between the health professions and we believe that starts from the roots up. One of the ways that we achieve our aim is to provide work experience to medical students from Cambridge University.

Most recently, Manu Shrivastava, a third year medical student at Cambridge did part of his work experience at Cliffs.

Manu was grateful to Arif, Paz and the whole team for the experience he gained from observing the chiropractors at Cliffs and he was keen to ask patients why they had chosen chiropractic over NHS treatment. As always our patients were not shy in coming forward with their reasons.

The overwhelming reason patients gave was the greater effectiveness of chiropractic over tried conventional treatment. In addition many patients were relieved to replace drug based treatment with a natural treatment such as chiropractic.

Another reason was the outstanding level of personal care and understanding, convenience and flexibility that Cliffs Chiropractic offers to them.

We wanted to thank each one of you that shared their feedback with Manu, who also expressed his thanks to you.

“Thank you to everyone for your comments! I had a really interesting experience at Cliffs Chiropractic and am grateful to Arif and Paz for their time. I have learnt a great deal about community healthcare provision outside the NHS.”

We wanted to share some of the comments we received on our Cliffs Chiropractor Southend Facebook page.

“First call was to the GP. Referred to Physio, but for my particular problem I still had pain. I dislike taking painkillers but it was unavoidable then. Paz has looked after my back and other related joints, for four years. No pills, no pain. I can step down from the curb with no pain. I can enjoy life to the full. Thanks to Paz.” Angela

“A true understanding of back pain, not just thinking I wanted a sick note! And treating the pain without painkillers.” Jo

“I didn’t even bother going to my gp with my back, neck and knees! No point would have taken forever to get anywhere with pain relief (other than pills)!! And trips here there and everywhere meaning a lot of time off work. You lovely lot do it all under one roof and have appointment times that suit me! Worth every penny.” Jackie

“Was so fed up with pain & taking pills that didnt work and being told it was the job I was doing.” Jill

“I will always try natural methods before anything else, I dread to think what state I would be in if it wasn’t for Arif’s help.” Diane

100 years young and going strong – we love Betty at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Betty is our most senior patient at Cliffs at 100 years and what an inspiration to us all. We love her. Betty has been a chiropractic patient for 25 years, initially coming for back pain …

She responded well to treatment for her back pain as the majority of patients do. Betty now attends for relief to her Hiatus Hernia.

This is a condition that is common in the over 70s where part of the stomach and stomach acids pop above the respiratory diaphragm. The diaphragm is also a muscle and treatment aims to gently reduce the stomach hernia by pulling it below the diaphragm muscle ‘ring’ and tone up the muscle. This specialised technique can be very effective and may be combined with taking a form of liquorice to coat the oesophagus protecting it from stomach acids reducing the effects of heart burn.

You are never too old or young to receive chiropractic treatment. At Cliffs Chiro we tailor each patient’s treatment to their individual needs with treatment that is gentle and effective for your age and for your needs.

If you are suffering from pain or if you have any other concerns, whatever yoru age, please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice to get you back up and running as soon as possible. You can contact us at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend on 01702 430430.
