Thinking of doing some walking this winter? Cliffs Chiropractic shares this advice on how to stay safe

Cold wintry weather is sweeping Britain at the moment. With lots of icy roads and pavements it has the potential to be quite hazardous under foot. This hazardous weather could also cause injuries with slips and falls.

As a leading Chiropractor Southend we would like to share some tips on how to stay safe when out walking this winter.

  •  It is a good idea to have two pairs of shoes; one for driving and wearing indoors and another pair with good treads, to walk in the ice and snow
  • Waterproof or lined shoes and thermal socks are also a good idea as these stop your feet getting cold or feeling numb
  • Make sure you wear comfortable and warm clothing, which allows you to move freely. Anything that stops you walking ‘normally’ could make you more prone to falling over
  • Practice your balance. As an exercise, standing on one leg is a fantastic way to improve your balance
  • When walking, try and keep your hands out of your pockets as this will also help keep your balance
  • If you are unfortunate and do fall, try to curl up and roll as this will soften the blow and help to reduce any jarring. Also try to avoid putting your hands out to save yourself – this could cause injuries to your wrist
  • Keep your wits about you. Try to avoid alcohol as this makes you less alert and may make you more unsteady on your feet

If you take these precautions you should stay safe whilst out and about this winter.

Detox with lemons. Cliffs Chiropractor shares these tips to introduce more vitamin C into your diet

Vitamin C is a vital vitamin to have within your diet. It plays a role in building collagen in the body and can reduce the chances of you catching a cold.

Lemons are a sunshine fruit packed with Vitamin C, holding a whopping third of the daily-recommended value. They have lots of flavour and the juice of an entire lemon only has 12 calories. Lemons are also an antioxidant, which could help decrease heart disease and fight some cancers.

Warm lemon water in the morning is a fantastic way to get this vitamin into your body. Simply squeeze half a lemon into a mug of warm water and drink it first thing when you wake up. You can also add the zest of a lemon into salad and pasta dishes.

Glucomannan – A Weight Loss Supplement That Works

Also introducing Green Coffee and Chilli Complex for normal energy yielding metabolism.

Glucomannan at Cliffs Chiropractor SouthendGlucomannan is a natural dietary fiber that is claimed to be an effective weight loss supplement.

Glucomannan is a natural, water-soluble dietary fiber extracted from the roots of the elephant yam, also known as konjac. Glucomannan comes from elephant yam, which is originally Southeast Asian. It has a long history of use in herbal mixtures and traditional foods like tofu, noodles, and konjac jelly.

Green coffee contains a substance called Chlorogenic Acid, which is believed to be responsible for the weight loss effects. Coffee beans are loaded with antioxidants and pharmacologically active compounds. Two of the most important ones are caffeine and chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid is believed to be the main active ingredient in green coffee beans. That is, the substances that produces the weight loss effects. Several studies have shown that caffeine boosts metabolism by up to 3-11% . However, the main active ingredient is believed to be the chlorogenic acid.

We have introduced Glucomannan and Green Coffee and Chilli Complex to our stock range of supplements. As with all our range we only stock the highest quality products at the best price we can find and after researching we believe there is very convincing evidence in their help with weight loss.

How does Glucomannan and Green Coffee help with weight loss?

Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fibre. Like other soluble fibers, it is believed to promote weight loss via several mechanisms:

  • It has a very low calorie content.
  • It takes up space in the stomach and promotes a feeling of fullness (satiety), thereby reducing food intake at a subsequent meal.
  • It delays emptying of the stomach, contributing to increased satiety.
  • Like other soluble fibers, it reduces the absorption of protein and fat.

It also feeds the friendly bacteria in the intestine, which turn it into short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, shown to protect against fat gain in some animal studies. These mechanisms are believed to be similar to the effects of other soluble fibers on weight loss. However, glucomannan is different from other soluble fibres due to it being even more viscous, which makes it particularly effective. Some human studies suggest that Green Coffee can reduce the absorption of carbohydrates from the digestive tract, which lowers blood sugar and insulin spikes. If this is true, then taking green coffee bean extract would be like eating a slightly lower carbohydrate diet.Other studies (in mice and rats) have shown that chlorogenic acid can reduce body weight, reduce fat absorbed from the diet, reduce fat stored in the liver and improve the function of a fat burning hormone. Chlorogenic acid has also been shown to drastically improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels in rats. These are important risk factors for heart disease.

Does it really work?

Fortunately, we have several randomized controlled trials on glucomannan. These types of studies are the “gold standard” of scientific experimentation in humans. In the biggest one, 176 healthy overweight people were randomly assigned to ingest either a supplement with glucomannan, or placebo (a dummy pill), while on a calorie restricted diet. Three different glucomannan supplements were tested, with varying dosages. Some also had other fibres added to them.

As you can see, weight loss was significantly greater in the glucomannan groups.

Incoporated into Lamberts Green Coffee and Chilli complex is a full 100mg of chilli extract that provides 2mg of capsaicinoids. Research has shown that capsaicinoids aid the breakdown of fat in the body and that 2mg is a relevant level.

Also included the B vitamins for normal energy-yielding, as well as a significant 200µg of chromium which contributes to the maintenance of both normal blood glucose levels and to normal macronutrient metabolism. Green tea has become a popular choice for slimmers, who can include it as part of their calorie controlled diet, so this is also included. It is especially effective when combined with a weight reducing diet, which is the case with all weight loss methods.

Other Benefits

In addition to promoting weight loss, glucomannan may improve a number of risk factors for heart disease.

According to a systematic review of 14 studies, glucomannan can:

  • Lower total cholesterol
  • Lower LDL cholesterol
  • Lower triglycerides
  • Lower fasting blood sugar

The main mechanism by which it reduces blood cholesterol is by decreasing absorption of cholesterol in the gut. According to these studies, adding glucomannan to your diet could potentially lower the risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Dosage and Side Effects

In contact with water, glucomannan expands and can absorb up to 50 times its weight. Therefore, the recommended dosage of glucomannan is lower compared to other fiber supplements.

Glucomannan does not have any effect on weight loss unless it is taken before a meal. Timing recommendations range from 15 minutes to 1 hour before a meal. Glucomannan is well tolerated and is generally considered safe. However, if glucomannan expands before reaching the stomach, it may cause choking or blockage of the throat and esophagus (the tube that moves food from your mouth to your stomach). To prevent this, it should be washed down with 1-2 glasses of water or other liquid. Some people may experience mild side effects, such as bloating, flatulence, soft stools or diarrhoea, but this is usually uncommon. Green coffee does contain caffeine, which can have numerous side effects when consumed in large amounts. This includes anxiety, jitteriness, rapid heartbeat, etc. If you are sensitive to caffeine, then you should be careful with green coffee bean extract. The chlorogenic acid may also have a laxative effect and cause diarrhoea.

Has TV show The Jump inspired you to get on your skis? Our Southend Chiropractor offers this advice on keeping safe in the snow

With the final episode of ‘The Jump’ seeing Joey Essex crowned champion, taking to the snow may seem tempting to some. Especially with February half term coming up.

While taking to the slopes can be great fun and provides a great form of exercise, there is also a risk of injury. As with every type of exercise, making sure you prepare your body beforehand plays a vital role in avoiding injuries.

Here at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend, we want to share some tips on how to stay safe in the snow:

Training your muscles – skiing and snowboarding will have you using muscles you may not even know you. Some excellent exercises that you can start doing now that will prepare your body are squats, sit-ups and cycling.

Get balanced – Good balance is the key to skiing. Get yourself a wobble board to improve your balance and build up your ankle muscles.

Bounce around – To build up and work out your ‘skiing muscles’ you can use a mini trampoline.

Roll along – To develop good posture, invest in a pair of roller blades and get out and about on them.

Get yourself checked out – it’s often easier to turn your body one way when starting out as a skier or snow boarder. Often this is not simply down to technique, it’s down to your body. A chiropractor will be able to assess you and identify areas of weakness that you may need to work on.

Do you have a distressed baby? Craniopathy at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend may be able to help

Many of you have been surprised by the number of pregnant ladies, babies and young children that attend the clinic.

Arif one of our Chiropractors at the clinic is a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association and Member of the Royal College of Chiropractic Paediatric Faculty.

Giving birth can sometimes atler the shape of the baby’s head and can make breathing quite hard for the baby. By gently using his hands and fingers to correct distortions and compressions to a baby’s cranium, spine and pelvis it is possible to alter the shape of the head, normalise neural function and restore a child to a peaceful, happy and healthy state. Improvements can be noticed in just a few days. Above all these are very safe procedures and highly preferable to medication.
