Top two triggers for back pain and tips for maintaining a healthy back and neck from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Surprisingly, it’s not strenuous exercise putting most people’s backs out!

back pain treated at cliffs chiropractor southendAs part of BackCare Awareness Week (6th – 12th October) Arif and the team at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic are urging people to think about what they put their backs through during an average day, as research findings reveal that sleeping and sitting are two of the main culprits for triggering neck and back pain in the UK.

Three quarters (75%) of people surveyed in East Anglia say they are currently experiencing back or neck pain or have done in the past. More than one in five (22%) say they suffer on a daily basis*.

43% of UK respondents pin sleeping as their most common pain trigger and 44% said sitting is also a trigger

In the UK it seems modern lifestyle could be to blame; 82% of those surveyed say they spend up to six hours a day sitting in front of a computer screen and almost one in five (19%) spend more than 4 hours a day watching TV.

Arif cautions that inactive lifestyles could be causing unnecessary pain and is encouraging the nation to make small adjustments to daily routines, to help improve their back health.

Breakdown of a sedentary day:

  • 73% spend more than six hours sleeping
  • 28% spend over six hours sitting
  • 33% spend between two and six hours looking at a laptop or tablet
  • 49% spend between two and six hours watching TV or a film
  • 82% spend up to six hours a day sitting in front of a computer screen

Arif comments: “As a nation we’re becoming increasingly sedentary and struggle to switch off – whether it’s sitting at a desk or lounging on the sofa, hunching over a mobile device or lying in bed for too long, the effects of modern lifestyles are taking their toll. Understanding how to sit properly and keeping active will help improve posture, strengthen muscles and therefore reduce neck and back pain.

With 35 million working days a year lost to back and neck related problems* it’s really important that people think about their back health when going about their daily business, and that they seek help from an expert if they are in pain to avoid more long term problems.”

The Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic has some TOP TIPS for maintaining a healthy back and neck:

Sit up straight – keep arms relaxed and close to the body and place arms on the desk when typing. Make sure the top of the screen is level with the eyebrows and the chair is titled slightly forward, allowing for the knees to be lower than the hips and the feet to be flat on the floor.
Keep moving – if sitting in the same position all day take regular breaks – ideally every 30 minutes. It’s good to stretch your arms, shrug your shoulders and move your fingers around – this helps to keep the muscles more relaxed.
Switch off – try to limit the time you spend leaning over you mobile devices or with your laptop on your knees especially after a day spent in front of a screen, to help improve your posture and relieve neck strain.
Sleep easy – test out your mattress before you buy it to find the perfect one and lie on your side rather than lying on your front with your neck twisted to one side.

For more information on how to maintain a healthy posture, the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has developed ‘Straighten Up’ – a simple, three minute exercise programme for all ages, designed to help strengthen the spine and improve posture and help joints. You can watch the video here:

A too common cause of back pain – Cliffs Chiropractor Southend shares this advice

Most people at some point in their lives will suffer from back pain. The impact on their lives can be considerable. Everyday things such as driving, sitting at a desk, sleeping and picking up children can become extremely painful and arduous tasks.

Poor posture is one of the major causes of back pain in the UK. Our lifestyles often contribute to developing poor posture and back pain. If you find that you are:

  • sitting for hours at a desk or at your computer
  • slouched in front of the TV for several hours
  • sleeping in a bed that is too hard or soft
  • hunching your back and shoulders

your posture is probably suffering and so is your back.

To treat back pain effectively you need to find its cause, which a chiropractor is ideally placed to do. An experienced chiropractor will want to understand your daily activities to be able to give you advice and the best treatment for your condition.  Here at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend we can advise you to make postural changes to help improve your posture.

The BCA (British Chiropractic Association) has developed a 3 minute programme called Straighten Up UK to help strengthen your spine, increase muscle tone and improve your posture.

This 3 minute programme is designed to counteract the sedentary things we do in our everyday lives and is suitable from the very old to the very young.

The programme is also aimed to be simple, quick and easy to do every day – just like brushing your teeth.

Watch this video for the 3 minute Straighten Up UK programme. Before starting on the programme it is advisable to ask your chiropractor, GP or health professional about the suitability of these exercises for your specific needs.

Tips to keep your kids backs safe as they go back to school from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Paediatric care at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

As children and their families are getting ready to go back to school this September, it is important to remember to look after your children’s back health.

Here are some simple tips from The British Chiropractic Association to help make the return to school a happy and healthy one.

  • Bag it up – a rucksack really is the best option, as long as your child carries it over both shoulders, with the straps are adjusted so that the bag is held close to their back and heavier items are placed at the top of the rucksack.
  •  Keep it light – your child should avoid carrying any excess weight in their bag – check it every day to make sure they aren’t carrying any unnecessary items.
  • Best foot forward – wearing good, soft-soled shoes that are supportive and have a good grip on the ground will make carrying a heavy bag much easier. Ensure shoes laces are tied up properly for support.
  • Move around – staying still for a long time is bad for the spine. Limit your child to 40 minutes on their phone, laptop, tablet, and computer or in front of the TV then encourage them to get up and do something else for a while.
  •  Keep fit – Regular and frequent exercise is best – the fitter they are, the less likely they are to injure themselves.

Getting ready for a new school term? What’s in your kids school bag asks Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Kids school bags advice at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

As the new school term approaches, it is important to think about your child’s posture, as they will be carrying schoolbooks and stationary in their school bags. It is how your child carries these things that can have the most impact on their health.

Research from The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has shown that 33% of parents say that their child has suffered from neck or back pain in the past. Back pain can be caused by a number of things but heavy school bags are often a common trigger. Books, lunchboxes, sports gear (including trainers) are the most common found items in a child’s school bag and if these are packed incorrectly it can cause aches and pains.

Below is some very useful information from a BCA Chiropractor.

Tim Hutchful, BCA chiropractor, comments: “Making sure your child doesn’t suffer from back or neck pain this autumn term can be as simple as checking they aren’t carrying around heavy items with them unnecessarily and that they carry their school bag correctly.I see an increasing number of young people complaining of back or neck pain and often it’s due to the weighty bags they carry. As youngsters have more belongings than ever before, like mobile phones and tablets, there’s a tendency for them to overfill their bags but, by doing these two basic things, you could be helping them avoid painful back problems”.
