Keep your back safe on your summer holidays with advice from a chiropractor in Southend

Summer is in full swing. For most of us that means plenty of BBQ’s, lots of sport, outdoor living and time spent at the beach. It also means the annual summer holidays. Whether you are going abroad or staying in the UK you will be eagerly awaiting your summer plans. Whatever your plans my advice to you as a leading chiropractor in Southend is to keep your back safe during this period.

Your time off work may be spent on a fitness camp, zip wiring down a gorge or white water rafting. It may include painting your garden fence and trimming the hedges, it may include lounging on a lilo. These are all activities that if you’re not careful can lead to back pain.

As part of my duties as a chiropractor in Southend I often advise my clients how to keep their back safe on their summer holidays.  If you are getting ready for your holiday then we have put together some tips to help you avoid unnecessary injuries while handling your luggage:

  • Buy the lightest case you can and ensure it has wheels. Always check the weight of the empty case – looks can be deceiving.
  • Pack two lighter cases rather than on heavy one. Distributing the weight across 2 cases will make them easier and safer to carry.
  • Push your case in front of you if it has wheels. Most people pull their cases behind them which in turn cause them to twist their bodies and backs. This in turn can lead to undue strain on your back.
  • Start your journey rested. Many accidents and injuries result from tiredness. Get a good night’s sleep before travelling and keep mindful of your actions.
  • Don’t overdo it. Whether you are resting on a sun lounger or racing down a cycle track you must listen to your body and don’t push it to extremes.

If you have concerns over a back injury please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice to get you back up and running as soon as possible. Contact us on 01702 430430 or email us at info@CliffsChiro.co.uk to get in touch.

Avoid couch potato World Cup Injuries this year with advice from a leading Chiropractor in Southend

The Football World Cup in Brazil has been a fantastic occasion so far.  It is one of the biggest shows on Earth. There have been some amazing games and unexpected results which has kept a lot of us, including myself glued to the screen. With up to 3 matches a day at the moment there is a lot for us to watch. As great as it is having all this football viewing, there is a slight risk to your health, bad posture.

Unfortunately for most of us we won’t be able to physically attend any live matches in Brazil. Instead we are likely to be stuck inside and sat on our couches for up to 3 matches in a row. As bad as missing out on the carnival and glorious sunshine is, my main concern as a leading Chiropractor in Southend is your posture.

If you aren’t sat properly it can lead to back pains and other bodily pains. Being a busy Southend Chiropractor it is my duty to offer my advice to patients to avoid any potential problems. So to enjoy the feast of football without damaging your body my advice to you is;

  • Get up and walk around at half time – Sitting in one place or position for too long is not good for your body and health. So when half time comes get up and make yourself a cup of tea or glass of water. Stretch all your stiff muscles and joints and walk around.
  • Ensure you are sat correctly – Don’t slouch. Make sure your body weight is supported by the couch as much as possible and don’t put any strain on one particular area (such as your neck).
  • Ensure the TV angle is right for you – Don’t sit one way and constantly turn your head to watch the TV. Make sure you have the TV in front of you to avoid any unnecessary strain on your neck.

If you feel like you need any further advice or a one-to-one session to avoid any back and neck pains during the world cup then please contact us at the Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic on 01702 430430 or email us at info@CliffsChiro.co.uk

Chiropractic Awareness Week 14 – 20 April focuses on helping teenagers – Cliffs Chiropractor Southend shares insight

ICAW colour low rest’s Chiropractic Awareness Week between 14th and 20th April and this year the focus is on protecting teenagers from back and pain.

The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) along with Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic are using this year’s Chiropractic Awareness Week to warn parents that their teenagers could be at risk from suffering back or neck pain due to their sedentary lifestyles and excessive use of technology.

At Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend our experienced team of chiropractors in Southend are seeing an increasing number of young people suffering back pain.

Our Certified paediatric chiropractor in Southend, Arif Soomro from the Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, said:

“We are seeing more and more people under the age of sixteen with back and neck pain and technology is so often the cause. Young people are becoming increasingly sedentary which is damaging their posture. There is the tendency to sit in a hunched position when working on computers and laptops, putting a lot of strain on the neck.

“Learning how to sit properly and keeping active will help to keep young people healthy and pain free. It’s important that parents seek help for their children from an expert as soon as any pain starts – if conditions are left untreated it could lead to chronic back and neck problems in later life.”

Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend will be holding Special Screening Clinics over the coming weeks. Further details will be made available on the website in the coming days.

Improve your posture and help your back Cliffs Chiropractor Southend offers this advice

It often surprises patients experiencing back pain who visit our team of experienced chiropractors in Southend that their posture is a contributory factor of their pain.

Poor posture can lead to back pain.

Poor posture is often a result of a person lifestyle and factors that can lead to it over a period of time include:

  • Spending hours hunched in front of a computer
  • Slouching on a sofa watching TV
  • Sleeping on the wrong kind of mattress
  • Hunching shoulders and back when stressed

You may realise that you are doing some of the above that may be having a negative impact on your posture.

You don’t have to wait to experience back pain before taking action to improve your posture.

As experienced chiropractors in Southend we advise patients on lifestyle and exercise changes they can make to improve their posture.

In addition, we recommend that everyone follows a simple 3 minute programme put together by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) that has been designed to improve posture and help reduce the risk of back pain called the Straighten Up UK programme.

We recommend that you watch the video and follow the programme.

However, if you are elderly or have ongoing health conditions you should always discuss any new exercise programmed with your GP, chiropractor or other health care practitioner before you start.

Technology is leaving teenagers in pain – a worrying trend reports a chiropractor in Southend

It’s a disturbing trend, however, our experienced team of chiropractors in Southend are seeing an increasing number of young people under the age sixteen with back and neck pain.

This trend is not isolated to Southend alone. In the UK, 40% of 11 to 16 year olds have suffered back or neck pain and worryingly, more than one in seven (15%) parents said their son’s or daughter’s back or neck pain is a result of using a laptop, tablet or computer.*

Poor posture and sedentary lifestyle are common causes that frequently lead to back and neck problems in teenagers.

Teenagers are spending increasing amounts of time using technology such as computers, laptops, tablets and mobile. There is a tendency to sit in a hunched position when using these gadgets which puts a lot of strain on the neck.

The increased use of these kinds of technologies along with watch TV also results in an increase in teenagers leading a sedentary lifestyle and poor posture.

As the Easter holidays are approaching we as Chiropractors in Southend are encouraging parents to limit the time their children spend using technology and instead encourage more active pastimes over the Easter holidays.

However, our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend want to advise parents of the importance of seeking help for their children from an expert as soon as pain starts possible – if conditions are left untreated it could lead to chronic back and neck pain in later life.

* Statistics taken from 2014 BCA research of UK adults – sample of 152 adults from the East of England.
