When doing what you love causes pain.

Emma SheehanEmma Sheehan, who works in the beauty industry loved her work and when she became a partner at Health & Harmony, a beauty salon in Leigh, she thought all her dreams had come true. However, after many years of working she was in jeopardy of having to give it all up until on the advice of her brother she visited Cliffs.

You may have read Emma’s story in the Echo.

Click here to read Emma’s full story and Arif’s diagnosis and treatment plan in the Echo. You can also learn ways to test your posture.

Emma was treated by Arif at Cliffs. Arif says “It was clear that Emma’s work position had contributed to a 50 per cent wear in the mid cervical spine. This, and poor posture, had led to a loss of the normal forward neck curve, resulting in a stooping upper back, neck stiffness and weak supportive musculature.”

echo years massaging story thumbnailArif was confident that she would respond well to a combined approach of chiropractic and acupuncture. The pain would ease fairly quickly but it would take time of course to fix the root cause by strengthening the area, improving her posture and altering her work and lifestyle.

“After just two weeks the numbness and the pain in my arm, due to a trapped nerve, had completely disappeared, and so had the headaches,” said Emma. “One year on I wake up refreshed and full of energy. I can work all day without getting stiff – although a little stiffness is inevitable in my job, and I’m walking taller because my posture’s better.”

Do you know anyone a bit nervous of visiting a chiropractor? This patient was before visiting Cliffs

patient at cliffs chiropractor southendStuart was one such person but since Arif helped “fix” his back he’s changed his mind completely.

Share the love by sharing this video with anyone who’s in pain and feels a bit nervous of visiting a chiropractor. Hopefully watching it will help them make a decision to seek out our help.

We love a triumphant success story here at Cliffs and nothing quite gives us job satisfaction like watching the journey of a patient bouncing back to good health! This brings us onto Stuart, an electrician who had been suffering from chronic back pain for many years. With a career that involves daily bending and squeezing into small spaces, Stuart thought that he would probably never be able to eliminate his back pain. But that soon changed with some treatment from Arif…

When Stuart first visited us at Cliffs, he was suffering from constant pain in the right side of his back that was actually a result of a knee problem. He was also living with pain on the other side of his back that he said was at number 8 on a pain level scale of 1 – 10. “I always thought it was sciatica” Stuart recently told us, “I had (it) for years.”

Like many of the patients that seek our help, Stuart had been putting up with chronic pain for far too long; and really unnecessarily. After being properly diagnosed by Arif and following a bespoke treatment plan, the pain in the right hand side of Stuart’s back has now “totally gone” and the pain in the left side has “improved enormously!” (Down to 2-3 on the pain level scale!)

We recently caught up with the new and very much improved Stuart and asked him what advice he would give to others suffering from chronic back pain. His advice was this:

“Don’t be frightened to visit a chiropractor. I was quite concerned at first. Arif put me at ease and fixed me.”

Like Stuart, some people suffering from back pain may feel apprehensive about visiting a chiropractor because of the “cracking” sound associated with the technique. In reality, the “cracking” or “popping” sound some patients experience during gentle manipulation (which most find incredibly pleasant) is simply caused by gas bubbles in the fluids that surround the joints. Contrary to some assumptions, chiropractic treatment does not involve “cracking bones”!

A good chiropractor will look to discover the cause of your condition and create a bespoke care plan that describes the diagnoses and suggested treatment. This may involve gentle manipulation techniques as well as advice on diet, exercise and lifestyle, and a rehabilitation programme for you to follow in your own time.

Patients like Stuart are proof that it is never too late to get your back addressed.

When Arif Met Melanie & Paz Met Aisha

Remember the movie ‘When Harry Met Sally’?

Well the team at Cliffs have a few of their own ‘When Harry Met Sally’ tales and we did say we would share some with you …

When Arif Met Melanie

Cliffs Chiropractor SouthendIt was 1984 and Melanie was in her final year of the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic. There was a local pub the students frequented and one autumn evening Arif was quietly sitting at a table with friends when there was a commotion- a girl had been unceremoniously grabbed and held upside down by some male ‘’friends” kicking someone’s drink over on the way.

Arif looked over and this was his first view of Melanie.

Afterwards being extremely embarrassed she extracted herself from the situation and sought a friendly face, she saw Arif across the room and thought, “I like the look of him” and the rest is history.

When Paz Met Aisha

Paz and AishaPaz says “Believe it or not, I met my wife through a blind date set up by my uncle and his financial advisor (now my father-in-law)! I had just recently graduated and thought it would be fun.

We talked for ages. She was amazing!

Apparently I left an impression too!

That was 11 years and 3 kids ago. I’m truly blessed to have found my best friend.”

How Cliffs helped love blossom

Sue at Cliffs Chiropractor SouthendWe’re sure you’ll recognise Sue but what many of you may not know is how Cliffs played a pivotal role in Sue meeting her partner of 11 years.

When Sue arrived at our clinic to start her shift on the 14th February 2005, she assumed it would be like any other working day. But little did she know that a delivery from a patient would change her life forever …

Sue’s journey into work was pleasant but uneventful and as always, she arrived happily; all set for a day ahead at our busy chiropractic clinic. But as she walked through the clinic doors, something was different; as lying on the doormat in a bright red envelope was a card addressed to her. And of course, it was Valentine’s Day.

Intrigued by the mystery delivery, Sue opened the neatly sealed envelope to find a beautiful Valentine’s card signed by none other than “Guess Who?” She didn’t recognise the handwriting, there were no other obvious clues as to who the anonymous sender could be and her close colleagues at our clinic seemed to be no more in the loop than her. So she put it to the back of her mind and carried on with the rest of her working week.

Two weeks later, however, Sue arrived at work to excited colleagues telling her that her secret admirer would be calling her that afternoon. And right on cue, he did! A gentleman named Paul told Sue he had sent her the Valentine’s card after seeing her when he had recently visited the clinic for an appointment. Forgetting to ask for his surname in the excitement, Sue later checked the appointment book for the date of Paul’s appointment only to discover that there had been three Pauls visiting the clinic on that date! But with a touch of Sherlock-Holmes-style-handwriting-investigation and a process of elimination, Sue was finally able to identify her mystery admirer.

She remembered him fondly.

On the 7th March (which happened to be his birthday) Sue called Paul and they arranged to go out for a meal together on the following Friday. Ever the gentleman, Paul picked Sue up from her home and had a beautiful bunch of roses waiting for her on the front seat of his van. Off they headed to Spaghetti Junction for their first of many dates.

This March, Sue and Paul will celebrate their 11th year together.

You see, Cliff’s Chiropractic Clinic really can change your life for the better!

It’s The Month for Romance. But Do You Really Love Your Back?

It may be the month for love and romance but how much do you cherish your back? If you’re like a large chunk of the population, then the answer is likely to be “not enough”. According to our leading Southend chiropractor, not enough people take the appropriate measures to look after their spinal health – and chronic pain and discomfort is often the result.

Our trusted chiropractor in Southend has put together three simple-to-implement tips so that you can give your back the TLC it truly deserves (it is an incredible mechanism, after all!):

1: Get Your Posture Sorted
Don’t slump in your chair, don’t hunch over your desk and avoid walking or standing with those rounded shoulders. Maintaining a good posture is possibly the simplest way to achieve a healthy back and avoid developing long-term painful back conditions.

2: Get Moving
Exercise is one of the best ways you can strengthen your back muscles with walking, swimming and cycling being the most effective.

3: Get a Good Mattress
Visit a reputable mattress shop and get professionally advice on whether your mattress provides the right support for your weight and build and any back condition you have.

How to Ease Your Pain with the Power of Your Brain. Advice From Our Leading Southend Chiropractor

managing chroninc pain advice from cliffs chiropractor southendIf you suffer from chronic pain, you will know the frustration that can occur on a daily basis. For some patients, chronic pain can arouse even stronger emotional reactions such as anxiety and fear. According to our leading chiropractor in Southend, chronic pain is highly influenced by the way in which an individual’s brain processes pain signals. This means that to a certain extent, the brain has the ability to manage and even decrease pain through breathing, focusing and imagery techniques, which can be used alongside chiropractic and other treatments.

Our award winning Southend chiropractor highlights some effective ways to train your brain to manage your pain:

1: The Breathing and Relaxation Technique

  • Make sure you are completely comfortable and relaxed in a place where you know you won’t be disturbed. Ideally, place yourself in a reclining position in a dark room. Either close your eyes or focus on a single point only.
  • Slow down your breathing by inhaling deeply and slowly through your nose while counting to ten. Then purse your lips and breathe out slowly through your mouth. Again, count to ten.

2: The Altered Focus Technique

Whilst in the relaxed position and breathing as mentioned in the point above, try to focus your attention on a specific part of your body that doesn’t cause you any pain. Then imagine altering the sensation in that area. If you’re focusing on your hand, for example, imagine it becoming warmer and warmer. This powerful technique will help take your mind away from the source of pain.

3: The Transfer of Sensation Technique

If you can use your mind to create sensations in a non-painful part of the body, then you can try transferring that sensation to the source of pain. For example, you can use your mind to create pleasant sensations in a non-painful hand, then place that hand on the source of pain. As you do so, imagine transferring the pleasant sensation onto the area that’s causing you pain.

4: The Pain Movement Technique

Use your mind to imagine moving your pain from one area of your body to a place where you think you would be better able to cope with it. If you’re suffering from chronic back pain, for example, “move” the pain to your foot, hand, or even out of your body and into the air. Some people are better able to cope with pain in certain parts of their body than others, so imagine a pain transfer that’s right for you.

There are ways to manage your chronic pain, so don’t suffer in silence.

Why is Lower Back Pain So Common?

causes of lower back pain explained by cliffs chiropractor southend

Lower back pain is a major complaint for many of the patients we treat at Cliffs Chiropractic clinic in Southend. But why is low back pain so common?

Our award winning chiropractor in Southend warns that while our spines are remarkable structures, they are susceptible to strains because of the intricate systems of bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments that all work together. Overtime, wear and tear can cause pain and stiffness.

Many cases of lower back pain are caused by the muscles and ligaments that surround the spine. When twisting the lower back (such as bending to unload shopping bags), the large muscles that support ligaments can overstretch or even tear. This can lead to inflammation that can result in the type of painful spasms that many back pain sufferers are familiar with. The lower back also carries all the weight of the torso which puts that area at added risk of becoming strained.
