Back to school: Encourage Good Back Health

back care advice for children from cliffs chiropractor southendFor many parents, September brings a sigh of relief as the kids go back to school and sanity levels can finally return to normal. But with another term comes another few months of worrying if your child is staying healthy beyond those school gates. While you can’t escape a few scraped knees here and there, you can encourage good spine health in your child and prevent their risk of developing future back problems.

Here our Southend chiropractor reveals four easy tips to ensure your child’s back-to-school is a healthy one:

1: Invest in a Good Back Pack!

Your child’s backpack should be light, snug and comfortable to wear with two wide padded shoulder straps and a waist strap. But remember a back pack is only as good as the way it is packed. Make sure your child unloads any unnecessary items every evening after school and carries the heaviest items at the bottom of the bag.

2: Encourage Good Health at Homework Time

You encourage good spine health in your child by ensuring he/ she uses a book stand while studying or reading. This will help to keep your child’s books at eye level and reduce the amount of strain on the shoulders and neck. And of course, there’s also the added bonus of creating extra desk space!

3: Warm Up For the New Term

If the typical British weather has kept your child away from many sports over the summer holidays, he/ she may need extra time warming up before they jump back into their school physical activities.

Good warm up routines should last for a minimum of 10-15 minutes and should include movements that simulate the sport about to be played.

4: Teach Good Posture

You may be able to remind your child not to slouch at home, but do your words resonate in the classroom? Instead of simply telling your child to sit up straight, educate them on the importance of good posture. Tell your child that maintaining the correct posture will reduce the amount of strain on his/ her neck shoulders and lower back and make him/ her more attentive in class!  The more your child understands the importance of good posture, the more likely they will be to practice it until it comes a natural way to sit. Encourage your child to sit with his/ her shoulders back and chin tucked in with a gentle “C curve” in the low back. You can check your child’s posture by seeing if his/ her ears, shoulders and hips follow a straight line.

Here’s to a term of A* back health!

B2B Taking Shape

Back to BusinessIn April we launched our B2B (Back to Business) campaign at London Southend Airport. Next on the list is HMRC Southend where there are 1,200 staff, the majority of whom are deskbound and have an average age of 50.

If you know of other businesses in the area that are interested in helping their staff improve their health and wellbeing, please contact Cliffs and ask to speak to Arif Soomro to arrange a workshop.

B2B is a fitness campaign with a difference: our goal is to help adults look after their backs by adopting a better posture at work – often hard to achieve if you’re sitting at a desk for most of the day. We saw this as important because back pain isn’t just painful, it’s expensive too; in 2014 back pain accounted for a loss of 10 million working days, or over a billion pounds, to the UK economy.

First we created a series of, easy-to-do exercises that would have the maximum impact on posture and energy levels, then we approached Jon Horne, the Chief Operating Officer at the airport and a back pain sufferer himself, to see whether he would like to be involved. He was keen for all his staff to benefit from this kind of programme, so we ran our first workshop with the air traffic controllers and then rolled Back to Business out to the rest of the staff.

Next on the list is HMRC Southend where there are 1,200 staff, the majority of whom are deskbound, and have an average age of 50. Our Back to Business programme will be perfect for them, as these exercises have been developed to be performed within the confines of an office space. Important too is helping to prevent and reduce musculo-skeletal problems which are, currently, the second highest cause of absence after stress at HMRC Southend.

If other businesses in the area are interested in helping their staff improve their health and wellbeing through Back to Business, please contact Cliffs and ask to speak to Arif Soomro to arrange your workshop.

Three Things You Can Do This Summer to Improve Your Spine Health

back care advice from our chiropractor in southendSummer is finally here but can your spine cope with all the fun and frolics that come with the hot weather?

Here our Southend chiropractor reveals three incredibly simple ways that you can keep your back fighting fit all summer long:

1: Ditch the Flip Flops

They maybe cool and convenient, but flip flops provide zero support for your feet, which is seriously bad news for your spine! This summer, whether you’re walking for exercise or just taking a casual stroll along the beach, choose shoes with a supportive base to help the spine and body stay in alignment.  Ideally, the part of the shoe that fits the back of your heel should be snug to avoid the risk of rolling the foot to the outside or inside.

2:  Take Breaks from Lounging

Although resting can create initial relief and comfort, the discs in your lower back are loaded 3-times more while sitting than standing. Sitting on the beach for hours on end may make for a blissful thought, but the reality is it is likely to cause or aggravate a painful back injury. Summer also brings many opportunities to socialise over a tropical tipple or two – a situation in which most of us have a tendency to slouch. Try and remember to maintain a good posture (no matter how much fun you’re having!) to reduce the risk of stressing your lumbar discs.

If you’re in an environment that’s likely to see you sitting for extended periods (such as the beach or in a beer garden), get up, stretch and walk around every 20 – 30 minutes. Remember that the spine is designed to move – and movement facilitates the delivery of healthy nutrients to the spine.

3: Sleep Well

Summer may bring longer days and shorter nights but that doesn’t mean you should alter your sleeping pattern. During the night while you’re asleep, the hard working structures of your spine finally get the chance to rest and be revitalised. If you don’t regularly get enough quality sleep, you’re not the only one who will feel fatigued and run down– your spine will too!

Implement these three simple tips this summer and you’re spine may just be a whole lot brighter!

It’s Never Too Early for Good Posture Habits

posture advice for children from Cliffs chiropractor sounthendAs a family chiropractic clinic, we are immensely proud of our reputation for providing chiropractic treatment to children. With the knowledge that’s available now,  our children have a real chance of living their entire lives without the burden of back pain; that’s why it’s so important for good habits to start early.

Arif, one of our leading chiropractors at our Southend clinic, is a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association and has been a Certified Chiropractic Paediatric Practitioner for fourteen years. He has created the following top tips on encouraging a major healthy habit in children – developing and maintaining good posture:

1: Be a Good Example

Demonstrating good posture is the best way to encourage your children to do the same.  Be mindful about how you’re sitting and standing – especially in front of your little ones.

2: Use Positive Reinforcement

Instead of simply telling your child to “sit up straight” when they’re slouching, give them motivating reasons to improve their posture. Tell your child that they look more grown up or taller when they sit up straight, for example. This praise will help your child to want to engage in such positive behaviour.

3: Use Visuals

Young children learn incredibly well through visuals, so try using images to teach your child about good posture. Other creative outlets such as making up a song or putting on a short play can also be really effective in helping your child to develop healthy posture habits.

4: Play Posture-Boosting Games

There are many games you can play with your child to encourage good posture. The more creative you are the more fun your child will have and the more likely they will be to maintain new positive habits.

“My Fair Lady” is a timeless classic where your child has to walk across the room carrying a book on their head without it falling off. By playing this game, your child will learn how to position their head and neck in the correct way for good posture. Why not join in with the fun and set up a points system where the player who carries the book on their head for the longest amount of time wins a small prize? Your child will think you’re great fun and you’ll probably improve your own posture in the process!

5: Get cycling

Take your children for bike rides regularly. Sitting and balancing on a bike can result in improved posture.

Poor posture is a major cause of back pain. Don’t let your children pick up the bad habits of our generation. By working together, we can give them the chance of reaping the benefits of a lifelong healthy spine.

Will You Be Stuck To the Sofa This Summer?

back care advice from chiropractor leigh on seaAhh, summer is such a wonderful season; long lazy days, relaxing weekends… it’s all about sand, sea and… sports!

If you’re a sporting fan then the perfect summer’s day probably involves you relaxing in front of the tele watching your favourite players battle it out against the rival competition. While the country goes “beach and barbeque crazy”, you’re more likely to be found fixated with the small screen schedule.

But while your sporting heroes may come out on top this summer, becoming a “seasonal couch potato” could mean your spine health may take a few knocks and blows.

Sitting incorrectly puts almost twice as much pressure on the back than when standing. Arif, one of our experienced team of chiropractors at our clinic near Leigh on Sea, warns that sitting for long periods of time could cause or worsen back pain. With 35% of people experiencing back pain after sitting for extended periods*, this common trigger is a real concern.

But it’s not all doom and gloom! By following our simple advice, you can enjoy watching all your favourite sports this summer without putting strain on your back:

1: Make sure that you change position every 20 minutes. It will significantly help your spine so stand up and move around regularly.

2: Use any mid-game breaks to do some light exercise. Instead of flicking through the TV channels during the 15 minute interval, get those back muscles moving by taking a walk round the block or even around the garden.

3: Avoid slouching and be mindful of your posture. If you’re sitting on a sofa, make sure you sit right back so that your spine rests against the back of the seat.

4:   Dehydration can contribute to muscle inflammation which is a major cause of back pain – so drink as much water as possible. If you’re partial to a beer (or three!) when you’re watching sports, drink plenty of water in between.

Small changes can make a big difference to your back health. It’s really worth following this advice – good health is the best goal you’ll ever score!

The Queen at 90 looks amazing; what’s her secret? Walking.

active ageing advice from cliffs chiropractor southendArif Soomro, founder of Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Essex, and Chiropractor of the Year, has analysed the Queen’s posture and says that everyone would improve their health and wellbeing if they took a leaf from her book and walked.

There aren’t many men and women who are working full time in their 80s, let alone their 90s, so it’s fair to say that Queen Elizabeth is an inspiration to all ages. But if I was to compare her outward appearance and energy levels to someone half her age, she’d come out on top.

After a lifetime of state dinners and chauffeur-driven cars, the Queen at 90 could look significantly different, but she doesn’t have diabetes, isn’t overweight or arthritic and is rarely ill. Before I’m accused of ignoring her privilege and considerable wealth, I don’t believe money and access to the best clinicians in the world have played any part in her obvious vitality. Our Queen is, quite simply, living proof that our lifestyle choices determine our future health. The biggest single factor that has contributed to her majesty’s excellent physical condition is, quite simply, walking.

We all know that walking’s good for us and that it’s the cheapest and easiest way to stay fit, but it has many other benefits: it’s a low impact exercise; it aids lymphatic drainage, which relies on body movement (unlike our blood, which is pumped around by our heart); the muscle contractions in the legs help the return flow of lymph up the legs towards the chest, taking waste products with it and improving fat metabolism; and, for every mile the average person walks, the spine will move to and fro 10,000 times, which prevents a stiff back.

What keeps the Queen looking younger than her years, is her posture. She doesn’t stoop which comes from standing tall, with her shoulders back and down, at all times. An open posture means you can breathe deeply, allowing more oxygen to circulate around the body which, in turn, makes you feel and look more energetic

The royal family is no stranger to chiropractic. Prince Charles has long been an advocate of complementary medicine and supported the state registration of chiropractic in the 90s and Diana, Princess of Wales was patron of the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth, the largest chiropractic college in Europe, where I trained with Melanie, who co-founded Cliffs with me. Melanie is also Chiropractor of the Year.

I couldn’t complete this article without mentioning food! As we age we need to modify what we eat because our bodies don’t need as many calories to carry out functions; less meat and more vegetables would be a good start. As our calorific needs decrease, our ageing cells need more nutrients and that’s where supplements come in; try calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium, omega 3 and co enzyme Q10.

We may not all be able to emulate the Queen’s healthy habits, but we can wish her a Happy 90th Birthday. Here’s to the next 10!

When doing what you love causes pain.

Emma SheehanEmma Sheehan, who works in the beauty industry loved her work and when she became a partner at Health & Harmony, a beauty salon in Leigh, she thought all her dreams had come true. However, after many years of working she was in jeopardy of having to give it all up until on the advice of her brother she visited Cliffs.

You may have read Emma’s story in the Echo.

Emma was treated by Arif at Cliffs. Arif says “It was clear that Emma’s work position had contributed to a 50 per cent wear in the mid cervical spine. This, and poor posture, had led to a loss of the normal forward neck curve, resulting in a stooping upper back, neck stiffness and weak supportive musculature.”

echo years massaging story thumbnailArif was confident that she would respond well to a combined approach of chiropractic and acupuncture. The pain would ease fairly quickly but it would take time of course to fix the root cause by strengthening the area, improving her posture and altering her work and lifestyle.

“After just two weeks the numbness and the pain in my arm, due to a trapped nerve, had completely disappeared, and so had the headaches,” said Emma. “One year on I wake up refreshed and full of energy. I can work all day without getting stiff – although a little stiffness is inevitable in my job, and I’m walking taller because my posture’s better.”

It’s The Month for Romance. But Do You Really Love Your Back?

It may be the month for love and romance but how much do you cherish your back? If you’re like a large chunk of the population, then the answer is likely to be “not enough”. According to our leading Southend chiropractor, not enough people take the appropriate measures to look after their spinal health – and chronic pain and discomfort is often the result.

Our trusted chiropractor in Southend has put together three simple-to-implement tips so that you can give your back the TLC it truly deserves (it is an incredible mechanism, after all!):

1: Get Your Posture Sorted
Don’t slump in your chair, don’t hunch over your desk and avoid walking or standing with those rounded shoulders. Maintaining a good posture is possibly the simplest way to achieve a healthy back and avoid developing long-term painful back conditions.

2: Get Moving
Exercise is one of the best ways you can strengthen your back muscles with walking, swimming and cycling being the most effective.

3: Get a Good Mattress
Visit a reputable mattress shop and get professionally advice on whether your mattress provides the right support for your weight and build and any back condition you have.

To book an appointment with our award winning team of chiropractors, contact Cliffs Chiropractor in Southend on 01702 430430.

Look slimmer taller and younger and get a better back too

good postureHaving good posture means holding your body upright against gravity, we can look younger and slimmer, breathe more easily and have more energy but we need to train our bodies to do this.

The ideal posture allows for a plumb line to hang straight through your ear, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. Try and stand in a relaxed way but gently contracting your abdominal muscles. When sitting, the same is true. The gravity line should pass thorough ear, shoulder and hip.

‘Straighten Up’ is a simple, three-minute exercise programme for all ages, designed to help strengthen the spine, improve posture and help joints.

These exercises can release tension in your shoulders so you look less hunched, build core muscle which will flatten your stomach, stretch your chest muscles so you can breath more easily and deeply helping you to feel more energised.

Give them a go for a New Year and New You.
