Does Your Back Pain Scare You?

Halloween is nearly upon us and when ‘scary’ things creep up on us! Hopefully, the scariest things to creep on us will be the neighbourhood kids!

For some patients we treat at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend, the pain that they suffered before visiting us was truly scary to them. Many patients have sought medical or professional help prior to visiting us, with no answers or relief.

Alvin is one such patient. Alvin says, “For four years doctors told me there was nothing wrong with me – Cliffs diagnosed me in twenty minutes!”. You can read Alvin’s story here and watch a video  of him explaining his story here.

Another patient, Rosie, was suffering so much pain in her jaw that she visited the hospital seeking answers. The hospital put her jaw problem down to her nail-biting. Not convinced, Rosie, pursued a diagnosis and solution to her problem and visited Cliffs.

When Arif examined Rosie, he found that she had extremely limited movement in her jaw and that her ability to properly open her mouth was also quite poor. The thorough examination provided the information needed to begin an appropriate treatment plan.

Just four weeks after her first visit to Cliffs, Rosie’s pain had almost completely disappeared and she was once again feeling “fantastic”. The constant and severe daily pain that made Rosie visit a hospital was gone in the space of a month! You can read Rosie’s story and watch a video of Rosie tell her story here.

Our chiropractors at Cliffs can’t stress enough that it’s important to keep seeking health solutions to your problem. The first step is an accurate diagnosis which leads to the right treatment plan.

Don’t let your pain scare you. Our experienced team of chiropractors are here to help you at Cliffs Chiropractic in Southend.

Common Triggers Of Back And Neck Pain Revealed In Recent Research

back care advice from our southend chiropractorRecent consumer research has looked at the trends in back and neck pain over the last five years and the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has released the findings to coincide with BackCare Awareness Week in October. Included  in the research was the trend of common triggers for back or neck pain.

If you suffer from back or neck pain you may very well have found that there is a common trigger to your suffering. Our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic often have patients tell them this.

Here are common triggers highlighted in the research.

Sitting for long periods: The number of respondents reporting this as a common trigger rose from 35% to 45% .

The job: A fifth of respondents identified their job as being a key trigger.

Sleeping: This remains a common trigger with 11% more women reporting it as a trigger than men.

Sports and exercise: Has made it into the list of top triggers, ousting housework and DIY.

It’s interesting to see that most of these triggers involve activities that we all do every day. Maybe this is why back and neck pain are relatively common conditions! However, with a few simple changes to our daily routines we can protect ourselves from the most common triggers. Here are our chiropractors top tips to protecting your back and neck:

Stand up and move around: Take a break from sitting every 30 minutes and stand up and move around. Take it as an opportunity do some simple stretches too.

Set up your desk and PC for a good sitting posture: Setting up your office chair to ensure you maintain a good posture is essential. Arif has created a video and information with easy to follow steps to avoid back, neck and muscle problems at your office desk. Here is a link to the Sitting Posture page.

Sleeping: Ensure your bed/mattress is providing you with adequate support. Here is a link to a post on how to choose a mattress that you may find useful.

Keep active: Whilst sports and exercise has been cited as a common trigger in the research, our chiropractors can’t stress enough how important keeping active and taking regular exercise is to maintain a healthy back. Many sports injuries are a result of a person not taking time to build up the intensity of exercise, not warning up and cooling some sufficiently and poor technique. If you are unsure of the type of exercise that’s right for you seek professional advice.

The consumer research also revealed that the number of people experiencing back or neck pain on a weekly basis rose from 40% to 45%  and 65% of people experience back or neck pain every month.

Our chiropractors recommend that if you are experiencing back or neck pain for more than a few days you should seek professional help. Official government guidelines from the NICE and guidelines from the Royal College of General Practitioners suggest the early referral for manipulative treatment, such as chiropractic is the most effective way of dealing with acute and chronic low back pain.

If you, or someone you know, are suffering from back or neck pain our experienced team of chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend are here to help you.

Is Your Back Pain Making You Feel Old?

It’s not uncommon for our chiropractors at our busy chiropractic clinic in Southend to hear patients tell them how their back pain is making them feel old.

It’s International Walk To School Month

Every October the International Walk to School Month campaign encourages children to join hundreds of thousands of pupils across the globe to walk to school. This year the focus of the campaign is to look at ways to make the walk to school safer and easier.

The campaign website is full of information including information on how you can get involved whether you’re a parent, a school or policy maker. Here is the link to the website

https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/what-you-can-do/campaigns/international-walk-to-school-month

Living Streets who organise the campaign in the UK released research by YouGov2018 for the start of International Walk to School month listing the top 10 most annoying thing about the school run. The top 3 include:

  1. Too many cars at the school gates (54%)
  2. Cars parking on the pavements (50%)
  3. Too much traffic on the road (45%)

As a parent (or even someone who lives by a school) you may find one of these to be your biggest annoyance too.

As chiropractors we’re keen to encourage adults and children to be more active and a walk to school is an opportunity to get in a few more steps every day.

So why not make this October your walk to school month.

Backcare Awareness Week 2018 Focuses On Back Pain In Older Adults

back care advice for older people from our chiropractor in southendBackcare Awareness Week is on the second week of October (8th – 12) and this year the focus is on back pain in older adults.

Back pain is one of the major disabling health conditions among older adults aged 60 years and older. Many causes of lower back pain are age-related with physical and psychosocial changes. There is a distinct lack of awareness, especially in older adults to the causes and effects of back pain and pain management. This year’s Back Awareness week wants to shine a light on the subject.

Existing evidence suggests that prevalence rates of severe and chronic low back pain increase with older age. As compared to working-age adults, older adults are more likely to develop lower back pain like osteoporotic vertebral fractures, tumors, spinal infection, and lumbar spinal stenosis. NCBI (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

Here at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic we are committed to helping people to live a pain free, full and active life whatever their age. Our founder, Arif Soomro, specifically developed a programme called The Back Story to help people learn more about what’s happening to their body throughout their lives and how they can increase their energy levels, strength and flexibility.

The programme is simple to use and by clicking on an age group your can learn about your body at this age, the food and nutrients that are best for it and the kinds of exercises that are best suited for the age group.

Following this progamme and making a few lifestyle changes today, and sustaining them, can give you benefits that last a lifetime.

Remember you don’t have to be perfect, you just need to start and apply!

If you are currently suffering back pain then our experienced team of chiropractors are here to help. Acute, chronic and general low back pain responds well to chiropractic treatment. Official government guidelines from the NICE and guidelines from the Royal College of General Practitioners suggest the early referral for manipulative treatment, such as chiropractic is the most effective way of dealing with acute and chronic low back pain.

Back Safe Baking …

baking back care advice from our southend chiropractorIt’s that time of year again, baking mania has hit our shores as The Great British Bake Off is underway on out TV screens. Paul, Prue, Sandie and Noel are back in the tent along with contestants eager to showcase their baking talents. So far the contestants seem like a talented lot as Paul is handing out what seems like way more handshakes than usual.

Sales of baking tools and supplies surge at the start of each series as bakers eagerly await the start of the contest. And why not as baking can be so much fun and is something that all the family can get involved in.

Whether your new to baking or a seasoned hand our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend want to make sure you keep your back safe when baking. Following some simple pieces of advice can often be the difference between a pain free back and a visit to our clinic!

Bakers and chefs can find themselves standing for hours at their kitchen counter tops so it may not come as a surprise that their counter tops can often be the cause of back pain that they experience. A counter top that is too high can really cause your back problems as you have to stoop over it. If your counter top is too high then spread you feet as wide as is necessary so that the surface is the right height for you. You may also want to use a chopping board of the right thickness to bring the work surface up to the right height for you.

Baking can involve quite  bit of lifting, bending and carrying.  It’s important to do these in a back safe way! You don’t want to know how many patients we have treated over the years who have bent over to pick something up and have ended up in pain!

When lifting, bend at the knees and keep a straight back.Bending over from your back is never a good idea.

When carrying an object, face the direction you are going to go in. Avoid twisting whenever you are lifting  or carrying an object.

Take regular breaks and do some simple stretches.

Keep your back ‘bake safe’ and happy baking.

If you are suffering back aches and pains our experienced chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic are here to help. Call us on 01702 430 430 to arrange an appointment.

Get Walking This Autumn

Summer is slipping away and autumn is nearly upon us, however, it can be such a great time of year to get outdoors and take some exercise. Our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend can’t stress enough how important taking regular exercise is both for our physical and mental health.

Walking is a great form of exercise. It is accessible, free and can be done by most people whatever their age or level of fitness.

We are fortunate that Southend and the surrounding areas offer many wonderful places to get outdoors and walk.

Our chiropractors advise that if you haven’t exercised for some time then start slowly. Make sure you wear a good pair of comfortable shoes that provide good support. Build up your walking pace over time. To gain the health benefits from your walking you will need to walk briskly. A good test to check whether you are walking sufficiently fast is to try singing a song – if you find that difficult but can speak it then you’re probably walking at the right pace.

If you have any health concerns then it is advisable to talk to your GP, chiropractor or other health care practitioner for advice before starting any new form of exercise.

Back To School Advice For Parents

back care advice for children from our cliffs chiropractor southendFor many parents the next week will be all about getting the children ready for the start of a new school term. There’s plenty to do from getting the school uniforms sorted out to making the last minute purchases of pencils, papers and pens.

It’s the time of year when our chiropractors turn their attention to reminding parents of the importance of  keeping their children’s back safe.

As chiropractors in our long established and busy chiropractic clinic in Southend we are increasingly treating younger patients. Children, as well as adults, are leading more sedentary lives and many are spending an increasing number of hours hunched in front of computers or over mobile devices. These actions are leading to an increase in back and neck pain in children.

Our chiropractors can’t stress enough how important it is to keep a child’s spine healthy. Maintaining a good posture is an important part of maintaining a healthy spine. The British Chiropractic Association has developed ‘Straighten Up UK’ a simple three minute programme specifically to help with improving posture. It has been developed to be a fun programme that people of all ages can do – a great way to engage your children without the need to nag!

You can view the video below and follow along.

Arif Soomro, one of our chiropractors, has also developed The Back Story programme which is a self help programme designed by age group to set out lifestyle changes that combat the effects of modern day living on our backs.  It starts with Toddles, Under 11s, Teens all the way through to the 80s – you simply click on the relevant age group for the advice.

One of the areas of concerns our chiropractors have is the stress put on children’s spines from carrying bags to and from school. It seems that bags are becoming heavier every year which is why it’s so important that as parents we ensure that bags are fit for purpose and not overloaded.

Backpacks are a good option for carrying, however, they do need to be carried and adjusted properly. The backpack should be carried over both shoulders and adjusted to ensure that the weight is spread evenly across the back and held as closely to the body as possible.

Here is a link to one of our previous blog posts about rucksacks with more information – Back to School Back Health.

At the start of the new term our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend wishes all school children a happy and successful school year.

Take Care of Your Back During Pregnancy

pregnacy posture advice, cliffs chiropractic clinic, back pain, arif soomroDuring pregnancy your body goes through significant changes some of which will affect your posture. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon for these changes to result in back aches and pains. Some of the more common changes which can result in back aches and pains during pregnancy include:

  • Lumbar curving increasing due to the increased weight being carried at the front of the body. In turn more pressure is put onto the spinal joints which can cause discomfort mad for some pain.
  • Increased pressure put on the upper back as a result of an increase in breast size can result in upper back aches and pain.
  • During the final stages of pregnancy the releasing of relaxin to soften muscles, ligaments and tendons can cause more problems when over stretching and lifting.

Our chiropractors at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic in Southend recommend that you take care of your back during pregnancy.  Seeking advice from a healthcare professional to help advise you on exercises and stretches you can do to help support your spine is highly recommended.

Taking appropriate forms of exercise is important, especially exercises that will help strengthen the core. There are specialist pregnancy yoga classes that can be undertaken from 12 weeks. Swimming and aqua natal classes can also be beneficial.

Our chiropractors recommend that you seek the advice of a health care professional such as a chiropractor, your GP, midwife or other healthcare professional to advise you appropriately.
