Changing Changes At Cliffs

Chiropractic treatment at cliffs chiropractor southend on seaWe are implementing a new system at Cliffs after a recent course Arif has attended. Very few chiropractic clinics ask their patients to get changed for regular treatments so we have implemented a one month trial of not undressing to assess how you, our patients, like it.

Most clinics prefer it as it saves the patients’ modesty and time. So, next time you arrive for your appointment please be prepared to take shoes and coats off and wear loose clothing if possible. For new patients and for review appointments it will be necessary to undress and wear a gown as normal.

Thank you for your help.

Sofa, So Bad … Why Posture Is Paramount For Back Pain

Our Back to Business workshops are proving to be effective

hmrc-001Over the past few months we have been taking our Back to Business programme into workplaces around Southend and it’s been great to hear the feedback from attendees.

Here is some of the feedback we received recently from attendees at our HRMC workshops:

“I enjoyed the visit a lot. It was good that it covered diet, posture and general day to day looking after your body”.

“I found Arif’s visit extremely informative. His style of presentation was very entertaining and a humorous and light approach is a good way to learn and keep your interest, and I thought he did this really well. You could see his passion for what he does and this makes me feel if I need to consult a chiropractor in the future I would definitely choose to go there and I would feel in safe hands with his team”.

“The talk with really good and he keep us interested the whole time. Plus I’m trying to put some of his suggestions into practice every day”.

“I found the presentation very informative. It was factual and had few elements of light-heartedness without being comical. Arif clearly demonstrated his specialist knowledge of the subject without a hard sell for his company. I’m now considering using his services”.

“I have been to see Arif at the Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, and cannot recommend him enough. I initially underwent an examination and had x-rays, which I then met with Arif to discuss. I was surprised at the results, thinking that I was pretty ok!!!!! Luckily Arif has devised a programme for me that should prevent any further discomfort, or potential back pain. I have undergone two treatments so far and can already feel the benefit.

If you are considering visiting him I would suggest you do as he has been very thorough, very professional, and very helpful, as I have said, I can feel the benefits already and am preventing any further injury”.

“I enjoyed the workshop and found Arif’s advice very useful. The stretches that you can do at your desk were good and worthwhile. The Q and A session  was useful- especially about armrests on chairs as they do not go under the desks properly.

We are under so much pressure from up above to sit still all day at our desk that it is very damaging to our lower backs.”

” I was pleased to be at the event. The best bit I liked was when he did the demonstrations on the 2 volunteers.

Effective, easily understood and logical. I will make an appointment to go and see him soon”.

‘It was like magic’

Watch Trevor describe the amazing results he experienced after 35 years of knee pain and one session with Arif.

You’ll also see Arif treat Trevor as he explains step by step the 3 points he uses to treat Trevor’s knee and how they work.

Trevor says of his knee and treatment “Before (the treatment) it would swell up if I was doing a bit of work, if I leant funny or whatever. I left here, nothing at all, absolutely nothing. It hasn’t played up,  ached, hasn’t swollen up. Nothing!

It was like magic.”

Back to Business at the HMRC

Arif recently held two Back to Business workshops at the HMRC office. The sessions were information packed and highly interactive with the participants experiencing first hand the benefits of the programme.

If you spend hours working at your desk all day, you may very well be complaining of a stiff neck, aching shoulders or a bad back. If any of this sounds familiar, please take a look at these six simple exercises we at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend have developed to help support you. They’re really easy to do, especially in the confines of an office. If you can make this part of your daily routine, you’ll be alleviating all those symptoms associated with lack of movement while improving your overall sense of wellbeing at the same time.

We are very proud of Arif’s election and it demonstrates the high regard in which Arif is held by his fellow chiropractors. We know that he will help shape a great future for the chiropractic profession with his drive and passion.

Arif says “I am passionate about chiropractic and the development of our awaesome profession. I have practised for 28 years and am still amazed at the results chiropractic achieves; I look forward to going to work every single day.

I take a keen interest in learning about new developments and have continued my education, mainly within the field of paediatric chiropractic (I am a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association), but also in medical acupuncture.

As a patient at Cliffs you’ve probably noticed that I love chiropractic! Simply put it has given me my main focus in life, outside of my family (although I met my wife Melanie also a chiropractor and medical herbalist at chiropractic college in Bournemouth), and for that I will be forever grateful.

Our profession has challenges from many angles – regulatory, political, competitive and even media. I look forward to serving the profession and be a part of helping to direct its future.”

Why Is Our Reception Full of Babies and Pregnant Ladies?

treating babies at cliffs chiropractor southendAs one of the UK’s first chiropractors to qualify as a Certified Chiropractic Paediatric Practitioner, Arif, who is also a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association, attracts new mothers and pregnant ladies from across Essex (and further afield) who are looking for Chiropractic treatment to help them.

Many people are unware that chiropractic treatment can be effective during pregnancy and for the care of babies and children. However, a specialised approach is required for this level of chiropractic care.

You can read more about the pregnancy care and paediatric care we offer at Cliffs on our website.

We believe that it often helps to hear our patients’ own experiences of the care that we offer. Here is feedback that we received on our Facebook page recently from two of our patients.

Pregnancy Care

“If you are considering chiropractic care whilst pregnant then without a doubt do it. I had my first child without chiropractic care (was kicking myself after!) the labour was much longer as I suffered hip pain, this I discovered much later was due to a variety of issues which led to the womb becoming the shape of a 3D figure of eight. labour took much longer as the head wasn’t engaged since baby was at the top and took a considerable time to move further down. Anyway the long and short of it was a long labour with the need for a drip etc to speed things along!! However when I had my second child I had discovered the wonders of chiropractic care. The labour was the total opposite, the womb would have been balloon shaped with the regular adjustments and was much better without the need of medical interference. I gave birth at home (as planned!) in much less time and a great deal more pleasant. All I can suggest is that with chiropractic care you will give both you and baby the best advantage possible at a stressful time! If anyone would like to know more feel free to ask. Arif was amazing and soooo enthusiastic too.” Col Wright

Paediatric Care

“I have been coming to see the team here since 2011. My daughter who is now 4 has been seen by Arif since her birth in 2012.

The team are fantastic, I can leave Sophia in capable hands whilst I have my treatment and she is in safe hands. She will be a great receptionist when she grows up.

Sophia has been seeing Arif since birth and she draws him pictures. She’s gone from a babe in arms to now lying down on the table and enjoying her treatment.

Sophia has a life shorting condition and her health and welfare is paramount. We will do everything we can to keep her healthy.

I believe that her treatment here benefits her condition.” Lisa Hyde

You can read more of our Patients’ stories and testimonials on our website.

If you are pregnant or have concerns about your child or baby’s health then please give us a call and we can answer your questions and if appropraiet book an appointment for you to visit the clinic.

Did You Catch Arif on Radio Essex on Thursday Morning?

arif soomro chiropractor southendArif was interviewed by Radio Essex on Thursday morning about ‘Text Neck’.

This new phenomenon is caused by gadget addicts looking down at their phones and tablets for long periods which results in postural changes that can lead to serious problems.

However, if you are at risk of suffering the consequence of ‘Text Neck’ all is not lost as Arif reveals how you can ease the pain.

text neck advice from cliffs chiropractor southendThe extra capability for playing games and browsing the internet on smartphones means that they are tending to be used for longer periods. And unlike laptops, tablet are often placed flat on the lap, meaning users crane their neck over to view the screen.

The average human head weighs between 10lb and 12lb and flexing the neck at an angle makes it harder to support, raising the odds of pain and stiffness which can radiate down the shoulders, arms and wrists. Headaches and even arthritis can develop.

Arif says, “‘Text Neck’ can lead to arthritic degeneration if left untreated and anyone experiencing pain should be checked. Some people work on a computer, play on their mobile phones on their breaks, drive home and work on their computer and their phone again in the evening and that’s really unhealthy. We are not built to be sitting down hunched over screens. However, that is exactly what people are doing with their necks. If people continue to put their necks into these positions, the body will gradually adapt to the stresses.  Because the head and neck move forwards, it will eventually lead to a reversal of the natural curve of the neck.

Postural changes will then occur, which can lead to serious problems.”

text neck advice from cliffs chiropractor southendArif reveals how to ease texting pain.

1) Take regular breaks from texting

2) Look straight ahead every few minutes; pull the chin back into the neck and hold that position for a few seconds.

3) Rotate your shoulders while keeping your arms by your sides

4) Sit up straight every time you text

5) Put the phone a little higher when texting.

It’s Never Too Early for Good Posture Habits

posture advice for children from Cliffs chiropractor sounthendAs a family chiropractic clinic, we are immensely proud of our reputation for providing chiropractic treatment to children. With the knowledge that’s available now,  our children have a real chance of living their entire lives without the burden of back pain; that’s why it’s so important for good habits to start early.

Arif, one of our leading chiropractors at our Southend clinic, is a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association and has been a Certified Chiropractic Paediatric Practitioner for fourteen years. He has created the following top tips on encouraging a major healthy habit in children – developing and maintaining good posture:

1: Be a Good Example

Demonstrating good posture is the best way to encourage your children to do the same.  Be mindful about how you’re sitting and standing – especially in front of your little ones.

2: Use Positive Reinforcement

Instead of simply telling your child to “sit up straight” when they’re slouching, give them motivating reasons to improve their posture. Tell your child that they look more grown up or taller when they sit up straight, for example. This praise will help your child to want to engage in such positive behaviour.

3: Use Visuals

Young children learn incredibly well through visuals, so try using images to teach your child about good posture. Other creative outlets such as making up a song or putting on a short play can also be really effective in helping your child to develop healthy posture habits.

4: Play Posture-Boosting Games

There are many games you can play with your child to encourage good posture. The more creative you are the more fun your child will have and the more likely they will be to maintain new positive habits.

“My Fair Lady” is a timeless classic where your child has to walk across the room carrying a book on their head without it falling off. By playing this game, your child will learn how to position their head and neck in the correct way for good posture. Why not join in with the fun and set up a points system where the player who carries the book on their head for the longest amount of time wins a small prize? Your child will think you’re great fun and you’ll probably improve your own posture in the process!

5: Get cycling

Take your children for bike rides regularly. Sitting and balancing on a bike can result in improved posture.

Poor posture is a major cause of back pain. Don’t let your children pick up the bad habits of our generation. By working together, we can give them the chance of reaping the benefits of a lifelong healthy spine.

How a Miserable Baby Became an Angel

The Echo, 29.3Newborn babies, cry. But the instincts of this tired and frazzled mum told her that her baby’s crying wasn’t normal. Fortunately she found Cliffs and with Arif’s help things changed for baby Jack and mum Andrea.

You may have read this story in the Echo …

Click here to read baby Jack and mum Andrea’s story in the Echo.

Andrea Richardson, from Thorpe Bay, was 28 years old when she gave birth to her first son Jack. It was October 2014 and both she and her husband were looking forward to welcoming their new baby into their lives. Her pregnancy had been problem-free apart from some concerns over his growth rate which had to be monitored, so they were ill-prepared for what happened next. Jack was positioned in such a way that a normal delivery was no longer an option but he was already in the birth canal and had to be manoeuvred back for the emergency Caesarean. The result that Jack was born with a black eye and an ability to cry for England.

Jack couldn’t settle, wouldn’t sleep and just cried all day and all night long. The only way he could be soothed was if he was propped upright. So for 10 weeks Andrea sat upright to help Jack get some respite, but she was shattered, needed sleep to recover from the operation and was suffering from post-natal depression. “As a first-time mum you do feel that everything’s your fault. But I knew it wasn’t normal for a baby to cry like this; I believed there had to be an underlying reason. He was very unhappy and I felt powerless to do anything.”  But Andrea is a resourceful woman and decided to take Jack to a baby massage class and see if that might help him stop crying. It didn’t. She was asked to leave the session as Jack’s constant crying was disrupting the class! The next stop was her GP, but she took the precaution of filming Jack to demonstrate how relentless his crying was.  After viewing the video, the advice was almost as disappointing as it was patronising. “He told me that I was a nervous new mum and a crying baby is natural. Basically, he told me to ‘get over it’. But I couldn’t get over it. My son deserved to enjoy life, to be calm and happy.”

Andrea became a bit of a recluse. She couldn’t take Jack anywhere because of his crying, not even in the car as he would scream as soon as he was in the car seat and the pram was no better; she couldn’t connect with other mums either as they weren’t experiencing anything like this with their babies. “I was feeling very isolated, but I was determined to help Jack, and that’s when I went online and entered ‘birth trauma’ in the search bar. Arif Soomro of Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, in Westcliff-on-Sea, came up straight away and I made an appointment to see him there and then.

Arif Soomro is the co-founder of Cliffs, and is a specialist in using craniopathy to treat babies and young children. Craniopathy is a form of gentle manipulation that repairs the distortions to the delicate plates in the skull that can cause discomfort and pain. These distortions are usually, but not exclusively, caused by the pressure exerted on the skull during childbirth. Its primary aim is to balance the tension in the membranes and fascia within the skull, restoring normal neurological, blood and cerebro-spinal fluid flow and to the nervous system.

“Jack was 10 weeks old when we saw Arif for the first time. He asked me lots of questions, examined Jack, but didn’t treat him. On the second visit, he told me what needed to be done to help Jack, we agreed the treatment schedule and that’s the day my life turned around.”

“Jack presented with a common cranial distortion known as ‘inferior vertical strain’” said Arif. “This appears as a narrowing of the forehead, a high palate and flattened rear skull. It can also lead to altered spinal curves, flat feet and toes that point inwards. Because of the high palate the tongue cannot easily rest in the roof of the mouth and babies can become nasal breathers with poor dental alignment and grow up with poor sagging posture. When treating Jack I gently directed pressure at various points upon the skull and in his mouth, in cycle with his breathing, to encourage balancing spinal motion. We cannot always know the pain a baby feels but it is reasonable to assume they do feel discomfort and distress. My objective is a simple one: to ‘reset any faults’ I detect with minimum intervention, so that the body’s natural ability to regulate and heal itself returns.”

Just before Andrea left the clinic Arif told her that Jack might feel a little sleepy. Andrea was hoping against hope he was right. “When I got home Jack slept for seven hours straight and he did that for the next three nights in a row. I couldn’t believe it.”

After six weeks he was like a new baby – happy, calm, sleeping well and rarely grizzly. Jack’s now 16 months old and his trademark look is a big smile.
