Let’s Squeeze, Sway and Cuppa

A healthy back will support you every day but, if you sit or stand for hours at a time, the chances are your back needs support from you. If you do nothing else, do these three things …

If you spend hours working at your desk all day, you may very well be complaining of a stiff neck, aching shoulders or a bad back. If any of this sounds familiar, please take a look at these three simple exercises. They’re really easy to do, especially in the confines of an office. If you can make this part of your daily routine, you’ll be alleviating all those symptoms associated with lack of movement while improving your overall sense of wellbeing at the same time.

The Squeeze

The Sway

The Cuppa

You can find three more exercises you can add to your routine on our Back to Business page.

So there’s no time like the present – let’s Squeeze, Sway and Cuppa our way to better back health:)

Back to Business is Launched at London Southend Airport

Echo_NewsOur exciting B2B (Back to Business) campaign has officially begun. We were invited to London Southend Airport to launch the campaign with a powerful takeoff. B2B is our campaign for bringing simple exercises to those desk bound at work, to ease and help prevent back pain.

With nearly 10 million working days being lost to back pain in 2014 and over a billion pounds lost in work productivity, we’re on a mission to fight the rising surge of work-related back issues.

B2B is a campaign with a difference

B2B involves us going into the workplace and giving an introductory talk and demonstration to staff. We follow this up with posters to be put up in the workplace and access to videos of the exercises for staff to refer to.

B2B consists of six simple movements that any desk worker can do to reduce stiffness, prevent back pain, improve posture and enhance energy levels. And what’s more, these short exercises take hardly any time to perform and they’re discreet (nobody wants to be the office’s “performing seal”, after all!).

We’re also working hard behind the scenes developing an exercise programme aimed at alleviating back problems associated with manual handling . Watch this space …

B2B Launches at London Southend Airport

BAck to Business at Cliffs Chiropractor SouthendWe were invited to launch our B2B campaign at London Southend Airport. London Southend Airport is owned by Stobart Group a company well known for its inclusive policies and all for one, one for all attitude.

Jon Horne, the Chief Operating Office,  suffers from back pain himself and was eager for his staff to be involved. Jon said “We can all make a difference to our own health and wellbeing; the practical steps set out in Back to Business can be done quickly and easily”.

The session was held by Arif, who demonstrated just how easy and effective the B2B exercises are and how these exercises should be done in the close confines of an office, and importantly, an air traffic control tower. Arif soon had Mr Horne and members of staff, performing the exercises and having lots of fun in the process!

A selected member of staff will become a B2B ambassador, receiving additional training from Cliffs, to help staff stick to the regime and to keep it inspiring and fresh.

So why is there such a need for an innovative campaign such as B2B?

At our clinBAck to Business campaign at Cliffs Chiropractor Southendics alone, we are treating more and more back conditions than ever before and this has nothing to do with an ageing population as patients are getting younger and younger. This is a direct result of our more sedentary lifestyles, our near-addiction to mobile devices, which is putting additional strain on the spine as we bend our necks to send and receive texts and emails and poor posture.

National statistics are even more alarming. The National Back Pain Survey conducted in October 2014 revealed that over 4 million working days were lost by workers aged 50-64 that year and workers aged 25-34 lost a whopping 1.89 million days due to back pain. Those in the 35-49 bracket took 3.86 million days off for back-related issues. The survey also exposed the heavy rise in back-related work absence; 7.7 million working days were lost in 2013 compared with 9.96 million in 2014.

Watch Arif explain what our B2B campaign is all about.

“I went to the hospital but only Cliffs could help me!”

Rosie was suffering from so much pain in her jaw that she visited the hospital seeking answers. “The hospital advised that I needed to distress,” said Rosie, who is now a patient of ours. “They said the jaw pain was a result of biting my nails but I didn’t necessarily feel that had caused my jaw problems.”

A significant detail that the hospital didn’t address was that Rosie’s jaw pain had only started a few months after undergoing a procedure to remove her tonsils. When she visited the hospital, her jaw pain had grown to “excruciating” levels and she was no longer able to put up with it on a daily basis.

Fortunately, Rosie’s instinct and unwillingness to accept the hospital’s nail biting ‘diagnosis’ prompted her to seek a second opinion at our clinic. And it wasn’t long before the true extent of her jaw problems became apparent.

When Arif examined Rosie, he found that she had extremely limited movement in her jaw and that her ability to properly open her mouth was also quite poor. The thorough examination provided the information needed to begin an appropriate treatment plan.

Just four weeks after her first visit to Cliffs, Rosie’s pain had almost completely disappeared and she was once again feeling “fantastic”. The constant and severe daily pain that made Rosie visit a hospital was gone in the space of a month!

Rosie’s story is a strong example of why it is so important to keep seeking health solutions – because they are usually there! An accurate diagnosis is essential to the right treatment plan; so if you feel like there are parts of your health puzzle yet to be solved, then keep pushing to get to the bottom of it. If Rosie hadn’t, she would probably still be in severe pain – with only perfect, un-bitten nails to show for it!

Arif’s Crosses Off One Of His Bucket List Destinations

IMG_2198In February, Arif crossed off a visit to one of his bucket list destinations and at the same time got the opportunity to pursue one of his great passions – other than treating his patients! Although once a chiropractor always a chiropractor, Arif still managed to treat people around him!

Many of you have loved Arif’s photos on our Facebook page so Arif shares his adventures and more photos with you all.

Arif’s Icelandic Adventures

The world is beautiful and fascinating. We have but a lifetime to explore and appreciate what it has to offer. Since walking in the forests of Germany as a child with my grandfather I have enjoyed the exhilaration of hiking and photographing landscapes. One of my hero’s of photography is British landscape photographer David Noton. I had the opportunity to join one of his Icelandic workshops last month, a 25th anniversary wedding gift from Melanie! Only 10 places were available to enthusiastic photographers. To visit one of my bucket list destinations for what was to be a photographic adventure was a dream come true.

For those of you who follow Cliffschiro on Facebook you’ll know how much fun we had and in answer to your requests, I am delighted to share a selection of the photographs from my trip. They include the Aurora Borealis, (Northern Lights), Glaciers, Volcanic Laval flood plains, waterfalls and a photo-bombing Icelandic Horse!

Conditions can be extreme similar to the scenery. Four to five thermal wind and waterproof layers were needed together with spiked snow boots, thermal insoles and two pairs of thermal socks. Hats and gloves were the norm even when working the camera. On day one I tried to operate the camera with no gloves and lost feeling in my fingers. You learn lessons quickly in this environment.

Talking of extreme, our Icelandic guide, Ao Thor “Wolf Thunder”, Yes really that’s what it means! was a true Viking in stature and bravado. Our transport was a Mercedes Sprinter minibus with the lower half and suspension surgically removed soaked in steroids and reattached so that it resembled a four-wheel drive monster. This meant we could drive beyond the reach of most, up 45 degree inclines, through rivers, snow fields and sheet ice. At times our jovial banter and and singing ABBA tunes was replaced by silent fear as we traversed sideways rather than forwards!

Once a chiropractor always a chiropractor and three of the group including Ao required treatment for an injured shoulder, neck pain and food poisoning. It felt like home from home . Even in a remote fishing village over a bowl of hot soup, two of the fishermen were keen for an adjustment. They didn’t speak English but obviously chiropractic sign language is international!

Enjoy the photos!

How does Arif start his day with Va Va Voom

Photo Booth 1If you know Arif you would have experienced his high level of energy and enthusiasm.

So we asked Arif to share his secret with us and you may be surprised at how simple the answer is.

Start the day with laying on your back in bed and breath in deeply through your nose to fill your ‘tummy’ with air for a count of 5, hold for a count of 20, and breath out through your mouth for a count of 10.

Repeat 3 times.

This optimises the exchange of oxygen in and CO2 out so you start the day with more energy and Va Va Voom!

If you want to be even more ambitious then Arif says:

“I also run 2KM most mornings before 6am and before starting work. I believe the 10 minutes of high exertion releases steroids and adrenalin into the body that boosts immunity in addition to keeping your heart and lungs in peak condtion. Doing it first thing means it becomes routine and you can get it done before the excuses to not do it come into your head!!”

What does Arif get up to when he’s not treating patients at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend?

Check this video out to see what Arif gets up to as he shares the Indian Ocean with turtles, manta rays, sharks, moray and colourful shoals of fish …

While Arif enjoys time away from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend he is passionate about his work as a chiropractor and delivering outstanding quality of care to his patients.

Arif says “Our patients deserve excellence and I believe every patient should be treated as if they were a member of my own family. To me this means caring for everyone as an individual, always explaining every aspect of their care and giving the best possible treatment all the time.”

Arif is a strong advocate of education. He believes in educating his patients and also in furthering his own education to expand his knowledge. He has furthered his knowledge by taking post-graduate courses in paediatric chiropractic, medical acupuncture, craniopathy and nutrition.

This year Cliffs is ‘Pushing for Babies’ announces Arif Soomro from Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

craniopathy at cliffs chiropractor southendMany of you have been surprised by the number of pregnant ladies, babies and young children that attend the clinic. I wish to share with you one of my greatest passions and why from this year we are “pushing for (more) babies” to avoid birth trauma.

Every month I see young babies and mothers who have suffered the effects of a difficult birth and problematic pregnancy. In many cases I hear emotional stories of assisted birth, breech presentations and tremendously painful deliveries, often ending with emergency c-sections and traumatised babies. The parents and child can be exhausted. All are desperate for help, having already tried ‘conventional ‘ approaches.

We need your help to spread the message that we can help. PLEASE share this with as many as you can. If you have ever had a sick child how grateful would you have been for someone to advise you on what best to do? Be the ‘someone’.

For many, one of the most memorable, emotional and potentially traumatic moments in life is birth. We rely at these times upon the knowledge experience and expertise of midwives, doctors and health visitors.

I admire the skills of midwives and the medical birth team. However having spoken and treated these professionals over the years it is clearly apparent the ‘mechanics of labour’ are giving way to an over medicalisation with c-sections and ‘assisted’ deliveries becoming the norm.

If we are to change this then we need to be share our knowledge with midwives and obstetricians and be recognised as experts in our field. To be heard we need a voice, the voice of experience, the first-hand experience of the parents, grandparents and babies who we have helped. So we will share case histories of families continuing this month with Jack’s story.

This year I have already started to approach midwives and hospitals in Essex to advise them on how understanding and applying my approach to the birth process can result in reduced labour pain and medical intervention. I also wish them to have the ability to know when to refer to us for treatment at an early stage.

The six most common reasons babies attend are:

  1. Colic.
  2. Persistant crying/ needs always to be held
  3. Poor feeding/latching on.
  4. Reflux.
  5. Poor sleep.
  6. Irregular bowel motions, i.e. less than daily.

By gently using my hands and fingers to correct distortions and compressions to a baby’s cranium, spine and pelvis it is possible to alter the shape of the head, normalise neural function and restore a child to a peaceful, happy and healthy state. It is incredibly rewarding and improvements can be noticed in just a few days. Above all these are very safe procedures and highly preferable to medication. Jack was just such a case

So far in 2015 we have seen our highest concentration of new patients who are babies. Our vision is becoming a reality!

PLEASE share this with as many as you can.

Arif is a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association and Member of the Royal College of Chiropractic Paediatric Faculty.

Matilda one of our youngest patients helped by chiropractic at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend

Parents are often left exhausted and frustrated with new born babies that persistently cry, have difficulty sleeping or feeding and are fractious.

Matilda was just such a baby and mum Daisy was in a desperate state when they came to the Cliffs in November. However, things have certainly changed for Matilda and Daisy with the help of Arif.

Arif is an expert in craniopathy , a specialised field of chiropractic that focuses on restoring normal cranial function. This can effect the function of the brain and individual nerves that leave through holes in the skull. Birth can exert tremendous forces upon the bones or ‘plates’ of the skull causing the plates to alter shape narrowing the holes through which the nerves exit. The results can be visually obvious in the shape of the baby’s head but the interference with the ‘cranial’ nerves often results in a child that has difficulty feeding, winding, or sleeping. The baby may sometimes be consoled by being kept moving and stroked.

The good news is a baby is naturally pliable and responds quickly if diagnosed and treated quickly. Arif has treated baby’s for 20 years and is on an international register as an expert in his field. “It can often be an emotional experience treating little bundles, there is a connection that comes through feeling their tension and pain. But seeing the happy child and beaming smiles on the parents faces is one of my greatest thrills and rewards.’

If your little one is havign problems then please get in touch with us as we offer a lot of help and advice and if appropriate you can book an appointment with Arif. You can contact us at Cliffs Chiropractor Southend on 01702 430430.
